Misc Winter 22-23 Whamby and Banter Thread Part 2

No reason to be pessimistic b/c of time of year. This is honestly the best looking predicted long range evolution we've had in a long, long time. It's not peak climo, so what? when you get a once in ten year winter pattern odds are it won't fall exactly during Jan 10-20th timeframe. At least it's not april 20th...

Also if the inverse were true and this pattern was showing on the front end of winter, say December 5-15th... you wouldn't see everyone posting "But it's not peak climo!!!"

I'd like to see more support outside of the euro suite or more eps support. Right now the gefs and geps have 1 member each supporting the op Euro while the 0z eps with what I would consider a significant snow event but about 10-15 that registered snow in that time period

You make good points but I just can't get excited about the prospect of even getting below average, much less anything frozen. We've seen a couple of good patterns show up on the models since early Jan, and not only have they not worked but they completely flopped. I have little faith that this isn't another head fake and we end up seasonal at best; which I'll take but...

I mean even for this weekend, about 3 days ago NWS had my highs in the upper 50s with lows in the upper 30s. Now its up to highs in the 70s with one day 66 and no 30s. That's the way it's gone since the end of Dec.

------------- talks about this quite a bit. People expect snow somehow a week after thanksgiving when this time of year is our snowiest time of the entire year.

I bet by 20 years from now, we'll finally quit calling March our snowiest time of the year.

Yeah this was the worst winter of our lifetime in most areas of the Carolina's when you combine warmth and lack of snow. 11-12 doesn't even crack the top 10 warmest even though it was snowless. It's ridiculous 4 of the top 10 have occurred in the last 6 years. And 3 of the others I know had snow for most. So this is the warmest and least snowiest winter combined at least in my lifetime.

Wow! So we haven't even cracked top 5 in over 60 years! Hope we experience a true winter torch soon like the good ol days.

14 yrs ago today...

I apologize for the crappy quality. I got lucky to capture this while channel surfing. I had a video capture card (which would have been much better quality), but I didn't have it plugged into my PC. I did still have a working VCR plugged into my HDTV at the time. I slapped a blank VHS tape in there and immediately hit record and ripped it off of the tape with my video capture card afterwards. This snowstorm saved 2008-09 winter because it was pretty similar to this winter on snowfall, completely abysmal. We got 4 inches from this ULL event.

EDIT: First and only time I actually experienced thundersnow in a winter storm. Completely caught me off guard the first time I saw that bright flash of lightning then heard the loud rumbles of thunder. I would love to be able to experience that again some day.

Sugar mountain had a 35-85” base at that point. They’re already at 18-58” this year..atrocious

I will believe the warmest model until proven otherwise.

I do think there is a tendency to dismiss models when they don’t forecast the desired outcome. Yes the indices don’t seem to agree but sometimes the projected indices change course and sometimes the weather just has a variable response.

My Bermuda is greening up a month early. More mowing for the lawn guys this year. Ground temps should be cozy through late next week.

Yeah mine is too. Crazy. Post February 15th begins spring in my mind until proven otherwise. It's our new climate.

Happy National Ag month! Reminder NC is one of the top 10 states in the country for ag. It is our number one industry and just like Texas, we are under the most threat. Number one industry in NC... 100 Billion dollars a year industry now. Screw developers eating valuable land in valuable places.

Folks, go back & re-read My "previous" post,, about, our *chances* for snow in March for N.C.

Since I returned (back here) from Panama in 1982, Seems (almost) every SENC "Snow Storms" I can recall, it seem(s), to have been in March.. (exception of 1989),,

However , w/this post I'll list Measurable snow(s) for the Month of MARCH, HERE in the Wilmington, N.C. area(s)..

Most were Boardwide, meaning ALL of N.C..
However, here are the Stats going back too 1870.
The (other) list,, I researched , only went back too 1959..
REMEMBER:
The following list is ONLY for Wilmington, N.C.
Here, in Wilmington, NC,, Proper.. 13% of (all "winter" events), of which are 16 total, "measurable Snow storms occurred in March..

NOTE: Trace amounts have fallen as late as April, 11th, 1989!!

The,
*Storm of the Century* in 1993 failed to give (Wilmington) any "Measurable" Snow, just flakes flying & very high winds..

Though,,

When was the biggest blizzard, or Snowfall, in North Carolina? From one *SPRING* storm?
Surprisingly...

The biggest recorded snowfall from one storm system moving through North Carolina occurred between April 2nd ~April 6th 1987.

As a massive storm passed over the state, A record of 60+ inches snow fell in western North Carolina in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Below is a list of Wilmington,NC, MARCH snowfall..
(I'm kinda a glass half-full), Kinda guy..
So....., ALL you folks,, B****hing/Moaning & grumbling, screaming & crying *winters ova*!

Take a step-by-step back off the edge of the cliff.. That FAT Lady hasn't sung ..... YET... ;)
We have (supposedly a great *cold pattern),, coming up, maybe We can ALL score something, instead of a very cold rain.. ;)

Credits too the WILM. NWS for these Stats..
NOTE: I didn't list any of the ICE Storm's, that may of occurred, As I'm positive there have/were some..
Ya'll have a great Day..

Please someone make a loop of the 00z gfs fantasy storm

Imagine being so emotionally damaged by a warm winter that you write paragraphs about people crying and how you can’t wait … when you yourself spent a whole winter moaning …. Lol. Y’all need to get a grip. It’s weather… boo hoo all you want lol.

Facts. I’m not complaining about the cold coming up. I know in 6 more weeks, 80s for highs is starting to become somewhat normal so I’m not tripping. Summer like weather starts in 5-6 weeks
