Wintry Winter 2019-20 Discussion

Yeah I love front loaded winters and would prefer one over waiting until mid feb when the sun angel sucks , the sloshing goes the wrong way and the pigs are set free. I’d much rather take a December 15th-January 10th window and roll the dice

Going be goats. This year lol

It is interesting when looking at the weak nino Decembers. For parts of central NC we have had Dec winter events for several of them.

Dec 2002, Dec 2003, Dec 2004, Dec 2018

Dec 2006 and Dec 2014 didn't have any events that I recall.

December 02, the greatest (worse) ice storm I have ever experienced! Now that was a wedge!! The day before, I think it hit 62 degrees, so much for ground temp nonsense! We started straight sleet/ZR, I think N.C. saw a period of snow, before changeover. Started early afternoon here! Great storm!!

December is almost a mixed bag w/ weak NINO Decembers. The weak, 2nd-yr NINO of 1958-59 takes the cake for biggest December event though imho at least in our part of NC. Hard to go wrong w/ 11" of snow/ice by mid-Dec in the Triangle.

I mean no offense Sleet city , I guess I'm just old fashioned, but naming winter storms seems so unprofessional (weather chanelish)
I'm with you. For one reason, it seems silly. For another reason, what is the criteria for a "winter storm"? I mean, we have set parameters for TCs, along with the weight of years of historical precedent for naming them. I'm not a fan of winter storm names. At all.

Interestingly enough, they have a criteria

"Winter storms are named based on either meeting, or the expectation to meet, at least one of the following criteria:
- NWS winter storm, blizzard, or ice storm warnings covering at least a population of 2 million
- NWS winter storm, blizzard, or ice storm warnings covering at least an area of 400,000 square kilometers"

And then there's their other criteria: publicity

Thanks! I didn't know that. It still seems a little nebulous to me. Getting a name depends upon the issuance of warnings which may not end up verifying, rather than the actual make-up of the storm itself. I know a winter storm is not an apples to apples comparison to a hurricane. But why not name floods or droughts or severe weather outbreaks? All of those can have large impacts as well. I'm just not a fan of it. But I won't complain about it any more today. :)

Anyone know where I can compare this time to the 2013-2014 winter season.

I’m over it at this point. I would have thought this silly thing would have ended by this point, but it’s been going on for 5-6 years now. lol I guess overall it’s harmless however I don’t feel like naming winter storms carries the same weight of naming tropical storms/hurricanes. Probably because you can track tropical systems for longer periods of time almost like watching a baby be born and evolve into a young adult. (sometimes)

2013-14 was a great winter for most of us.
-EPO was crazy negative, which trumped the nao and nao, which were really positive. That shows us that the Pacific is important for a pattern condusive for winter events east of the rockies.
