As people see this spreading around them and various businesses start to encourage people to work remote, schools close, etc people will react to that with panic... it just seems to be human nature. Just look at how the stock market has been so volatile lately, going up 1k points, down 1k points and back up and down the past few days. If people stocking up causes grocery stores to have shortages of food and the supply chain cannot keep up with that demand, shortages of food and inevitably panic would follow as well. It's also possible in the next couple of months this thing slows down or doesn't seem to be that bad here and things level out but it's best to be prepared just in case.

You know I might not be, maybe I’m just Numb to these outbreaks, it seems like every year it’s something new that’s going to kill everyone. I hope this virus dies down come Spring and summer. I don’t hate on people that are worried but I haven’t gotten to that point. God will take you when he is ready.

Unfortunately I think the fuse is lit, and lets face it they flat out are not testing for this.....this is to keep the cases low and hope that most people never develop serious enough cases of this. The aim apparently is to prevent panic but in the end all it is doing is letting this thing get everywhere. Anyone going to any hospital in the US for flu like issues needs to be tested....and its not happening, at least if they test them and they come back positive they can isolate them from the rest of the sick people at the hospital. Its silly how little testing the US is doing, its like if we don't test for it its really not there and will just go away.

Because people are people man. You can't find hand sanitizer anywhere, already. No masks either. Already reports of stores running out of stock on some things. Coworker said the other day she went to Costco and lots of items were out. I'm sure those will be replaced for now. But you've been around long enough. You know how people do.

And about the healthcare system...you ought to take a look at how many hospital and ICU beds there are. Not many. This virus is much more highly contagious than the flu. There is a real potential for rapid community spread once it takes hold. We're doing nothing to prevent that. If you get a large influx of people who need to be treated at the hospital, you will have a problem really quickly. Look at what's going on in Italy now. That's happened in a span of just a few weeks.

Am I wrong?

Heres the difference between this one and so many other "threats". Most of those nobody here even knew anyone who may have had contact through their boyfriends cousins sisters aunt.

Last night my wife sent her 2nd patient in 10 days to the hospital with pneumonia. Most likely the flu. After the patient last night though some eyebrows were raised because one of the assisted living residents had been to China and went through a 3 week quarantine successfully. This gives me slight pause because of so many asymptomatic transmissions with this virus.

I literally have like 1% chance of having contact with this virus already and it's not even widespread yet.

That’s real concern. Hospitals becoming packed to the rim where they can’t handle the normal influx of sick patients. There will certainly be problems if this were to play out. We don’t want a Seattle like outbreak over here. Populated areas are at the highest risk for obvious reasons.

Yeah, if it does take hold and spread around, people with cold/flu like symptoms will worry/fear for themselves that they have it and will go to there doctor/local hospital, it’s kinda like the domino effect

To some degree yes you are.... don't mean to be that guy, but those shortages aren't everywhere. Maybe it's because I live in a more rural, small town area but we have plenty of water, sanitizer, ramen, you name it. And I still don't understand what it is we should be doing that we aren't doing to prevent the spread, other than the common sense good hygiene, and if you're sick stay away from those with weakened immune systems (which should be done Corona or not).

No disrespect intended RC, you're still the fabulous fixer!

So knowing that the 2 patients have pneumonia like issues and they were in contact with someone who has recently been to China they should be tested immediately, I hope the hospital is testing them for it..... if they have it and they admit them to the hospital and do not isolate them it would be potentially very bad.

Did they ever test the person who had been to China to see if they had it? I mean they could have it and been asymptomatic seems like theyu should be testing these people.

Well it's tough to test when there isn't enough tests on hand to run on just anyone that asks. I spoke with a doctor I know last night and in NC right now unless there is sufficient cause to test someone, like they were in one of the hot areas, they won't check because there aren't enough tests available to the state. That's the biggest issue right now.

That's ridiculous though.....this is not some out of the blue virus its been out there for months now, I just feel like we are way behind the curve on this thing....totally reactive instead of proactive.....the fact its so contagious means early detection and isolation are your best weapons at limiting the expose of people and there is almost none of that going on.

As of right that I know of no tests are being done.

One of my sisters requires hospitalization about once a year (Long story). 2 weeks ago she was admitted. She lives in a county that neighbors St Louis County. They have two VERY large hospitals. The doctors needed to place her in ICU but no beds were available at either of the two. They had to ground transport her to St Louis where some ICU beds were available. Shes out now Praise the Lord.

I agree about the shortage of beds even in a non emergency time frame.

He's not quite on the same page as the WHO. But definitely does a good job keeping the hype down.

The WHO said today the CFR is 3.4. This guy said it's about the same as the flu, which is about .1%. Check out Dr. John Campbell if you get a chance.
 
@Rain Cold I got to amend my previous post, my wife showed me a pic of empty shelves where hand sanitizer, wipes and anti-bacterial soap used to be in our local retailer. Dang....so it begins

I guess it all depends on who you believe in. Both are knowledgeable doctors with 2 different views.

I get that as it relates to opinions around reactions and responses and predictions of where things are likely to go. But the numbers are the numbers. 3.4% ain't 0.1%, for example. And that's not a matter of experience. I'm no fan of the WHO, but I don't see how two sets of easily measurable data can be that far off.
