To some degree yes you are.... don't mean to be that guy, but those shortages aren't everywhere. Maybe it's because I live in a more rural, small town area but we have plenty of water, sanitizer, ramen, you name it. And I still don't understand what it is we should be doing that we aren't doing to prevent the spread, other than the common sense good hygiene, and if you're sick stay away from those with weakened immune systems (which should be done Corona or not).

No disrespect intended RC, you're still the fabulous fixer!
Thanks man, and I saw your other post. It's too late now to contain the thing. And you'll likely infect older people well before you know you're sick. I don't think people fully appreciate the degree to which this particular virus can spread. Once several cases pop up in a community, people are going to react quickly, whether it's rational or not.

I get that as it relates to opinions around reactions and responses and predictions of where things are likely to go. But the numbers are the numbers. 3.4% ain't.
0.1%, for example. And that's not a matter of experience. I'm no fan of the WHO, but I don't see how two sets of easily measurable data can be that far off.

He also said in the beginning of a new outbreak the numbers are always higher. He makes a lot of sense to me. I’ll have to watch it again. Maybe I missed something.

I don't get all the water getting gone. Like, the power isn't going to go out.
Only thing I can figure is they don't drink the water at their house and anticipate being homebound for a while ?‍♂️

He did say that, and he's right. I'm not really worried about the mortality rate. What bothers me though are that so far, there are no adequate answers to the following questions:

1) If this is just another virus on the order of the flu, then not just the people, but the authorities should be reacting the same way. Why are governments all over the world, including the States quarantining, shutting down communities and municipalities, canceling school and other events, limiting travel, etc.? If it was just one country, ok. But everyone? For just a flu? That makes no sense.

2) Why does the US appear to be so far behind the curve with the ability to test? We had 2 months to get ready. South Korea was ready. Japan was ready. Itally was ready.

3) Why do we appear to not have enough supplies like masks for the healthcare professionals? We had a long time to watch this train coming at us.

The reactions of authorities all over the world do not reconcile with the typical reaction to the flu. And we are inexplicably behind the curve in a number of key areas.

I guess. I have water on hand, but that was before this started. But I don't mind drinking my own water either.

I’ll need to see how the world reacted when the flu started. I got homework thanks to you!

@Rain Cold I got to amend my previous post, my wife showed me a pic of empty shelves where hand sanitizer, wipes and anti-bacterial soap used to be in our local retailer. Dang....so it begins

On my way home this evening, I stopped at 4 Walgreens/Food Lions and all shelves were bare of anything antibacterial. The last Food Lion had my Miller Lite though. ?
Other than that everything else seemed in order WRT being in stock including canned goods etc.

OT.. Yes, they’re awesome here in the Triad, especially price. When I left Atlanta metro in 2005, one of the things I missed the most was Publix Supermarket. We got two finally in Winston Salem, one so large it sits on a parking deck.

Yeah, I work in a food lion part time, some of there sales especially around Christmas is nice as heck, and there regular MVP sales are solid

Because people are people man. You can't find hand sanitizer anywhere, already. No masks either. Already reports of stores running out of stock on some things. Coworker said the other day she went to Costco and lots of items were out. I'm sure those will be replaced for now. But you've been around long enough. You know how people do.

And about the healthcare system...you ought to take a look at how many hospital and ICU beds there are. Not many. This virus is much more highly contagious than the flu. There is a real potential for rapid community spread once it takes hold. We're doing nothing to prevent that. If you get a large influx of people who need to be treated at the hospital, you will have a problem really quickly. Look at what's going on in Italy now. That's happened in a span of just a few weeks.

Am I wrong?
250,000 icu beds nationwide. Saw that stat a few weeks ago.

So I got sick last Friday. Saw the doctor Saturday. Patient portal says that I had a respiratory virus. I know it's not Corona, but I got a shot, cough syrup and went home. Not once questioned about travel or anything. Husband had it too, then my oldest got it. Still felt bad Monday so I called my MD live, and they asked if I had travelled and I haven't, so they sent out a prednisone pack and I'm great now. Called the same day for my daughter because her symptons are identical and I don't want to drag her into an office. This doctor never asked if we had travelled, and just said she needs an antibiotic even when I repeatedly told her I had a virus she didn't care. This is the problem and why it's spreading. There's no organization or focus. It's just either panic or a "whatever" attitude. Obviously can't have a country-wide SOP for this, but if there was something in place besides all the hand washing talk I think things would calm down.

Tip: aloe Vera + rubbing alcohol = hand sanitizer . We bought some and are making our own (own use) . Must be a nice time too be in the hand sanitizer business . Purell is gon make millions off our hysteria .

That or it’s time to break out the shine baby! Shine cures it all

I tried making some earlier this week just because I had the ingredients at home. Mine never gelled. I even added more aloe and still watery. Did yours work? It would work if you can pour it over hands where runoff didn’t matter.

Lets see how today does, probably gonna be 1.000 plus points the question is which way does it go....right now its south on the futures

I'm curious as to how long it takes for other cases to start showing up once they've been exposed? I mean I noticed in NC for instance, they've basically mapped out everywhere the one patient here has been, including RDU Airport, a local popular restaurant and his church.... as contagious as it is, aren't we fairly confident that someone in any of those locations has contracted Covid-19?

Its more a matter of actually testing, there are probably dozens of people in NC positive for Corona....it literally is not being checked for its like we are going out of our way to not test people that need to be tested......

Stuff like this...

"I just landed at JFK after reporting on #coronavirus in Milan and Lombardy —the epicenter of Italy’s outbreak— for @vicenews. I walked right through US customs. They didn’t ask me where in Italy I went or if I came into contact with sick people. They didn’t ask me anything"

Yep the key is testing. Right now we just approved the funding for wayyyyy more test kits and they’ll come in in the coming weeks o think we get 75000 spread out this week and next week and then millions get deployed after that ... this story isn’t going away for a while

Now wait one cotton picking minute here. If the Gov't is authorizing money for the CDC to create more kits, who are then dissiminated through the states down to the local hospitals.... Why are governors forcing Insurance companies to cover testing? If the test was paid for by the gov't why am I paying insurance costs for this??

Am i missing something here?

Yep. It can take a while to show symptoms, but I expect that sooner or later, we'll start seeing reports pop up, tied to this person...that is, if we test for it, like others have said.

This article isn't exactly a shocker; kids are walking disease vectors who spend all day in a germ factory (school).

I dont know if you are or not we just got funding approved for MANY things and more testing is only a part of what it is funding .. more tests that go out the less we will have to pay for them I assume

I don't think it's as simple as more test, which obviously is needed, but the logistics behind it. Not sure how in the world you track down every single person he may have come into contact with and test them.

This right here... at this point it's pretty much logistically impossible IMO to do the testing needed with how widespread this is. The issue isn't just in the US but also globally with people flying in/out... not to mention who they may be in contact with during that time on those flights, at airports, restaurants, etc. I said it a few days ago, I think this is too widespread at this point to effectively do anything about it outside of testing those who are showing symptoms and doing what is possible to keep them from spreading it to those most at risk. Furthermore, even people who have been quarantined have not been following it in some areas. The only option would be to basically shut everything down for 3-4 weeks, which still likely would not work since this is global, and the economic effects of that could possibly be far more harmful than the coronavirus itself. JMO on it but I think the US is taking the approach of letting this run its course now that this is so widespread globally while trying to contain those who are displaying symptoms as much as possible.

Correct - in fact a huge chunk of the $8.3 billion package is broadly appropriated to public health agencies to use at their discretion, e.g., $2.2 billion to "CDC–Wide Activities and Program Support", an additional $3.1 billion to the HHS Public Health and Social Services Emergency Fund's existing $2.6 billion FY 2020 budget, etc.

We are a day late and a dollar short at any attempt to limit the virus in America.....once these finally available test start getting used the number of cases will shoot up and so will the closing of schools and businesses etc.

Well yep that didn't take long, 2nd NC case and it's not related to the first one...
He did travel to Italy

"A North Carolina man from Chatham County traveled in late February to an area in Italy that now has a COVID-19 outbreak. He had two days of mild, flu-like symptoms while in Italy. His fever resolved and symptoms were improving, and he flew back to the United States the following day. This person was a contact to a case in Georgia and the Georgia Department of Health notified North Carolina health officials"

Why is it taking so long for people to come forward? Fear?
