Coronavirus (Stay on Topic)

The definition of pandemic vs epidemic is highly subjective but we're much closer to the former & this being a global pandemic rather than the latter considering that CoV-19 cases have been confirmed on every continent over the globe except Antarctica.

They don't want to call it a pandemic because it will cause panic.

What makes them woefully unprepared? Glad you asked, trump dismissing the disease as "just another flu virus", claiming it will basically magically "disappear by April" (Feb 10 NH rally), contradicting advisors within his own administration (at a recent press conference), the appointment of Pence to lead the US coronavirus response, the same person who once said "smoking doesn't kill" & who failed to handle the HIV/AIDS crisis in Indiana (ouch), & oh yea, let's not forget the administration's aforementioned budget cuts to the CDC & other government health entities, etc.
While all of this is true pence isn’t going to lead the efforts of scientists and the CDC HES simply just an organizer that gathers info FROM the experts at the CDC and WHO and is able to get info to people in government quicker. I have full confidence in our health officials and CDC. I mentioned earlier the thing about the flu virus. Obviously he’s hoping there still isn’t a problem by April and I’m sure he’s talking about the US not the rest of the world since he is the president of this country not theres. Again to what I said earlier HES just trying not to create mass panic when there doesn’t need to be AT THIS TIME.. and yes he cut employees from these agencies who haven’t done anything for 10+ years .. he’s a business man who knows and sees where the government is losing OUR money and obviously he didn’t know something like this was coming so he wasn’t wrong for doing that and as he said in his press briefing the other day he can easily get any personal that was cut back in the payroll if necessary and needed

He measures his success not only on the stock market but on all the things he said he was going to do that he has done(tax cuts/ regulation cuts/ millions of jobs added/ great economy ect.) yes he’s a bit unhinged at times but he’s not the worst president we’ve had that’s for sure. To when he compared to the flu virus while although this virus is a bit different a “Corona virus” is simply apart of the same family of viruses that causes common colds and the flu and is the same type of virus that SARS was all about (look how that ended up turning out).
Trump is not dismissing concern .. he literally said that there is potential it gets bad but that is why we are preparing for ALL scenarios. His job is to make sure we are safe and causing mass panic is surly not going to help. Him and even the experts have been talking about precautions as in washing your hands staying home if ur sick and all that Jazz .. there is simply nothing else they can say and or do that they haven’t already in being prepared for a possible outbreak... THE KEY WORD IS POSSIBLE .. this hasn’t happened yet and we are about as prepared as we can be for something like this. And he is saying “we have this completely under control” because right now we do currently have things under control people are being quarantined before coming into the country and travel has been banned for a while from the worst hardest hit countries.
I mean what else do y’all want these guys to do?! Close everything down cause mass panic and spray giant sanitizing machines through the streets where there’s currently ZERO people infected. That would only hurt our economy even more and the worlds economy in that case. We have to be smart not scared..

Saying it's the flu virus really diminishes the importance of the CoV-19 which was & has been Trump's intention from the outset, this is absolutely nothing like the seasonal flu virus, even though you're doing the best you can to spin it that way. Prepared as we could be? Loool ookkaay sure when you make large budget cuts to the health entities of the federal government, & say things like "the virus will disappear by April" literally just a week or two ago and not to mention sent federal officials to care for US citizens overseas affected by CoV-19 with no protection, that's not just unhinged, it's total incompetence & sheer ignorance. There's a massive difference between calming public fears over CoV-19 and being outright dishonest to them and giving them a false sense of security and Trump is not doing a good job at balancing these two.

At no point did I ever say or imply that we should shut everything down in the CONUS right now, don't put words in my mouth k thanks.

The WHO will make that determination; right now they still have it at PHEIC status.

Mexico confirmed first case. So now we know it’s here. Why is world reacting like it is? Govt especially? Is it that bad? Now hospitals need to start preparing and US needs to not give away anymore medical supplies. US needs to get all Antibiotics it can here. Not that we will need them but safe to have. Plans at hospitals should be made to make sure staff has sufficient rest when can. Exhausted staff will hurt. Also any retired nurses and doc and medical background should be contacted to help if they are willing. May not need but does not hurt in case hospitals are over run.

I agree with this assessment, until we see thousands upon thousands of cases on every continent (besides Antarctica), it’s not a pandemic imo. The Americas have yet to be significantly affected as far as we know

This is a great opportunity for a smaller company to purchase a manufacturing plant for medical supplies, like masks, respirators, etc.. and flourish.

I'd suspect 3M is already on it, and probably have the excess supply sadly.

Dude... contractor job? I knew you frogmen couldn’t stay off the sand. Unless you’re headed up to Bagram, then you have the Bagram lung to deal with. Cough, cough, cough.

Ill be in Kabul this go around. Prob.hop around a few other spots. These stints never come without a we forgot to mention or two but its my last trip over there......

Well dang ig it is true

This is worrying, how different that virus may be in Iran already. Hopefully, they're working with other countries for sampling... I mean mutations, are expected.. but this one in Iran seems particularly dangerous for a few days now. It's even infected their administration. Did it originate in Italy? Hm.

Yeah ever since it started there the mortality rate has been pretty high

This Coronavirus epidemic showcases the need for increased domestication of US goods and products or at least we need to find a multitude of other avenues abroad and diversify our supply chains rather than having most of them running thru China in some way, shape, or form.
There's a bigger elephant in the room though and that's everyone wants to run lean. With the rise of the 3pl warehouse model that many companies have gone to no one wants to pay storage and handling on their inventory so everything is just in time and based on a forcast with paper thin margin for error. Whether you are a domestic manufacturer or an import redistributor that philosophy leads to significant out of stock periods when there is any supply chain disruption or surge in demand. When the tariff increase hit we ran into similar issues due to ther influx of containers at American ports and the lack of manpower to clear customs and be trucked to our locations. When we asked domestic suppliers for inventory to backfill they basically said sorry no inventory because everyone else is doing the same.

A global supply chain and economy is fine if people prepare correctly. There is too much of an obsession on margins and the idea that freight and distribution are margin killers in the supply chain. Companies want to shoe horn people like myself into being judged on metrics of how close is your forecast, how many points did you save on margin that preparation for any disruption is damn near impossible. I wanted to order up on our PPE in January but couldn't because it would put my PO spend above my metric set. Now we are struggling to find product.

Ebit, bottom line dollars, margin % are what means everything not fortifying your supply chain

Not really that worrying to me. When your administration is getting it and you are exporting it to other counties it probably very widespread. Probably 10 to 20 thousand infected there if not more.

I wouldn't count on the Tehran government to be especially cooperative, their Ministry of Health has been concealing the severity of the outbreak all along.
