I have watch videos of our old snows in the 80’s/90’s and laugh at what we called radars back then. Amazing how much the technology has advance over the years.

Yea they would draw the maps out with a pencil. I don’t think kids theses days even know what a pencil is.

Freezing rain can be a tricky deal around here. I know the models have improved a lot since this happened, but I remember once when I was in high school we were forecasted to get a cold rain, and I ended up stuck on the school bus on the way to school that morning because of freezing rain. A deputy sheriff had to take me home, and there were wrecks all over the place.

The Triangle hasn't had a really bad ice storm since the December 20002 one. We used to have them a lot more frequently before then.

I remember December 2002 was a bad ice storm. Big wedge and lots of precip. Lost power for a few days. I never got stuck on a bus. That would suck.

Me too actually. At least what you post is factually correct. The amount of wrong information posted on here -- and accepted with no hesitation -- is more than I can take most of the time. My colleagues make fun of me constantly for posting on here, but no one likes to talk shop like I do. And all my close meteorologist friends have moved far away ?. I don't get why you're made out to be such a bad poster when I can name five or ten more that literally drive me to the edge virtually every post.
 
Punting the entire winter on January 10 is ridiculous. Especially since the second half of January looks cold and possibly active.

Why would someone make fun of someone for posting on a weather board? That seems weird.

Don’t listen to those guys at work...outside of their job, the only person who talks to them about weather is their mother. You’ve got us!!!

Dude, no way. You're in my top 3 or 5. I am mainly just referring to posters who seem to ignore any factors that are working against a particular event and only want to continuously harp on the one or two factors that are positive without looking at the big picture. That's where I can get so frustrated.

Honestly, posters like Brick who are honest and sincere and just offer their personal thoughts and experience remind me of just talking to a family member or acquaintance. At least it's a genuine interaction. I feel like some of the posters on here constantly have a motive - whether it's just looking for any glimmer of hope or trying to get one over on someone. Maybe that's just me.

P.S. Thank you for your insight too. I think you are probably the most underrated poster on this board. There have been many times you picked up on a feature that I hadn't yet and it turned out to be important or worth watching!

I appreciate that. My colleagues are good guys, they are a bit leery of social media and for good reason - one of them got absolutely ambushed by a broadcast meteorologist in Charlotte this past summer on what appeared to be an innocent interview and it was an absolute joke. We've also been railroaded by our own management a couple times due to pure ignorance. There's such a communication gap between meteorologists and the public (or even non- meteorologist management) that it is just very difficult to convey what we do, the degree of difficulty, or honestly how good so many are at what they do, despite seemingly always being conveyed as "wrong".

I appreciate your posts when you go beyond the models and show the synoptic setups that are going on. I love learning as much as I can about the meteorology. Just tell your coworkers that you are doing pro-bono work to spread your knowledge to uneducated public when you post here.

So how do we go about “fixing” the communication gap? The position of local met and the NWS is kind of lost among the sea of social media at times. On top of how argumentative social media is now. A met posting his update is just greeted to a billion self-proclaimed weather experts in the comments saying how wrong the met is.

Tough position to be in..

The funny thing is I use what I post here for weather briefings sometimes so it's not like I'm not posting the real deal.

It is but certainly not unique to just meteorologists. I think honest communication is important. I also think it's important not to pretend to know more than you do. My main area of expertise is winter weather, but I am not nearly as interested (or knowledgeable) about severe weather.

I think that's ok too, but unfortunately we're expected to be all-knowing about all aspects of weather and that's really, really tough. That's not to say I couldn't work a severe event at NWS, but I definitely don't have the knowledge or time invested as I do other forms of weather.

I think that's why the broadcast folks are so heavily scrutinized - they try (are forced) to sell themselves as THE weather authority for their viewing area for each and every type of weather. It's a lot to even ask, and on top of having to prepare the packages to present the weather their time for deep dive analysis is often limited. Then when they and NWS blow a forecast, it's a huge black eye for the whole field. It's a vicious cycle haha.

thanks man! I appreciate it. Def top 3 or 5 posters for sure as well. I know how hard it is with the social media game as well. Thankfully most who follow me on there are nice tho.

Yeah honestly I would never ever ever want to be a TV Met. They really do absorb all of the blows for the weather community. Weather really is a deep subject. It’s impossible to be the “expert” in all modes of weather events for an area let alone an entire state.

Huge props to you guys for all that goes into it. I’m sure there are countless sleepless nights for a lot of Mets across our area fairly often haha. NC is a very diverse climate to say the least.

It was discussed between the admins and mods and approved. We had to establish some type of organization and structure or we leave everything up to subjectivity as well as do not steer the community as a whole in the correct direction. As our member base grows so does the post count and so do the posts that teeter on the line of stay or keep not to mention the imby posts. I didn't see the offending post that started all of this but I will gladly discuss moderation with you via pm and anything else you think is unfair or changed. I would appreciate if you or anyone else has an issue with moderation or the board that you send myself or someone on staff a PM versus addressing in open forum. We can then discuss the issue amongst staff and provide you with an answer and resolution. Airing these issues out in the banter thread isn't the best for any of the parties involved and leads to folks firing off emotional messages before stepping away and thinking about it.

If there is a sense that the staff is too strict or unfair I think that is a little overstated. We do the best we can to keep things on an even playing field between everyone and allow looser discussion while sticking to the point. Ive barely posted since the december storm because I know 75% of my posts are still not going to be constructive and generally bitter.

Outside of tonight, there looks to be one more time period below freezing for KATL on the FV3 with the fantasy wedge later this month.
 
I was gonna chase this storm, until I realize that there's a better pattern coming up soon to chase, i rather have a home storm where I don't have to chase at all but, all my years of chasing, it's still in my blood. I find myself not chasing as much as I use to because I'm getting older and a bit wiser lol. I have a wife and 3 kids, I'm not single, so it's kinda hard for me to just jump in the car and ride. I guess I'm bored ATM, and figure I post on here. Any one who chases, it's fun, it's a hype, it's also dangerous and scary and playing with life and death when entering into the extreme weather world. I guess that's the hype part about it. If your married, please be honest with your spouse, and let them know your chasing and not on a business trip lol. Had to.
