Tropical Major Hurricane Irma (Part 1)

She spends enough time over Cuba to weaken around 10MB or so before FL approach. Gains some back on the way.

It just keeps going west. I am starting to wonder if it will miss Florida and get into the Gulf. And then who knows what after that.

I don't expect Irma's interaction with Cuba to have a substantial effect on her. The part of Cuba that her inner structure will likely pass over is some of the flatest on the island. She's surrounded by some of the warmest SSTs on the entire planet. We saw how she burped out the dry air from earlier. She's too big, and her inflow is too massive to have any major impact on her strength. A drop of 5-15mb at most, and when she pulls back to be fully over the bath water SSTs she is going to regain all of what she lost and then some.

Here's a good terrain map of Cuba showing elevation in meters. Also, per the Cuban radar it doesn't appear that she moved South. It just looks like that way on satellite because of the shape of the island. She's moving west and very close to the NHC forecast points.

I'm curious to see if she maintains that movement. What a weird storm.

I can't imagine her doing it for too long, but if she does get over those waters... a big explosion is going. All the strongest storms in this part of the world have been at their worst around there .

If Irma does bounce of Cuba, it may have done about the best thing possible for the storm. No doubt friction has tightened up the eye and probably the windfield as well.

Could Cuba be making it turn wsw due to that side being dragging the land? That is what I believe is happening?

Ugh @ the NAM with the slower movement and more wind, rain over into SC.
