Misc Winter 22-23 Whamby and Banter Thread Part 2

It does not take cold like we had at Christmas for winter weather though.
I've seen it time and time again here in the upstate where some of the best snows occurred at 35-36° So nope all these people sitting back hollering major Cold evidently don't realize we don't need the coldest of Air. Give me 35 and Upper levels just below 0 and I will take my chances all day long here regardless of what models or anyone says

State had another potential student suicide. Obviously the worst dream of those of us who work front lines with students.

I know there’s some state students here and I hope if you ever feel like that, you’ll go see student services.
I don’t feel good , can you send me money? I’m a state student… well till May!

Up to this point in winter with nothing frozen at this point, this year reminds me of 2012-13, 2014-15, 05-06, 06-07 and not to leave out my good buddy 2011-12 that's always in the back of my mind. Long story short those winters played out like this.

05-06 pretty big ice storm in December all freezing rain but not a flake of snow the rest of winter but way better than this winter so far with at least a winter storm.

06-07 torch most of winter. Mid February a dusting to a 1/4 of snow and that was it.

2012-13 nothing until mid February and ended up with some heavy snow showers that gave me a quick 4.5 inch accumulation in about 4-6 hour time frame on a weekend. Nothing before or after that winter.

2014-15 nothing until mid February and ended up getting 3 winter storms in a 10 day period. 4 inches of sleet and 6 inches of snow all in 10 days. 3 separate storms.

2011-12 the worst, nothing but a few sleet pellets towards the end of February. Not a flake all winter. My worst winter ive experienced if you like winter weather.

Just my 2 cents on the winters ive experienced in the past. Doesn't mean nothing on how this one might play out but we have been down this road many times before.

I don't want cold like Christmas either because it's guaranteed to be dry. 35-36 to start out and wet bulb down is fine. But to stay at 35-36 and have major accumulation is hard. From my experience here 34 and under is when it can really accumulate.

I haven't seen a single person in here argue that this is objectively a good pattern. Thing is, once threats start showing up the pattern doesn't really matter. We track threats here, it's what we do. Most threats don't work out, in any pattern... maybe this threat is even more likely to trend poorly b/c of the underlying pattern, who cares? We track it anyways. As the example posted above, lots of winter storms manifest in the midst of bad patterns, it's not uncommon at all.
I guess maybe some people would prefer no discussion about anything other than how bad the pattern is. Maybe from now on, just find the maps with the most red over the SE and talk about how bad the pattern sucks 10 times a day and rack up the likes

That's easy because it's already happening. Maybe some people should look outside

I was wondering how many of those warnings verified. Seems like it stayed just a degree or two too warm.

There seems to be a narrow band south of me that did and of course the mountains in NW Arkansas but otherwise yeah I think most people underperformed tbh. Temps were just killing us the entire event I definitely agree there

But seriously you can't make this stuff upFB_IMG_1674628535620.jpg

Dang, that sucks. Nothing worse than getting a complete shaft with a winter storm warning in your backyard.

You'd think with those rates and after dark you would have gotten something to stick at least. I didn't look at soundings out there, but I guess the boundary layer was a little too thick/warm to overcome.

What a feels like in the main thread

As I said the other day for those who didn't read it, it'd be nice if people posted a balance instead of just shooting everything positive people want to track down.

For those who continue to post exclusively why it isn't going to do [fill in the blank] it gets unenjoyable to read and discussion falls apart.

Don't let bittercasters get you down.

Doesn't bother me...I like the balance of discussion to be honest. It's just we have some that are glass half full and some that are sitting with an empty glass and its fun to read. I think we will see measurable snowfall by mid-Feb.

We got 2.78 in 30 mins this morning. Per local tv Met.
I mean I can remember a time where we could not buy a drop of rain so I don’t take this for granted. Sure I want some snow but I also don’t want a drought. We need to keep the SD drought maps at bay as long as we can.

This is why people who poo poo those of us who worry about soil temps and above freezing BL temps are simply wrong. It’s hampered storms here, too. With horrible conditions like that, you need consistent, heavy rates, and not every storm has that.

I know a Guy on here that does that!!

Arkansas and western TN are going to get slammed with an ice storm next week according to the GEFS. Hate it for them. Honestly, from a normal person's perspective, Atlanta has some of the best weather in the world! Very few threats. We don't flood very often, never ices or snows, really, Tornadoes are sparse. Wind damage and sometimes high heat indexes are the only real threats. Most of the year is quite tolerable. The only terrible thing is the yellow pollen plaque every spring.

Maybe we can start a thread for that? I remember a while back when a Mod said that once a person "punts" on a topic, they will be removed from it. Maybe that is still applicable?
