This is actually a great article for anyone wanting crops or a nice lawn WRT watering and soil type. I'd suggest a read
On a dry soil that has become hydrophobic, stratiform is the best. You may only get .3 or .4, but it'll do a lot more than a 30 minute deluge that drops 1.3. A 30 minutes dump just goes Woosh into the ditch.
 
You can see it in the cloud tops that the mid levels are warm soup, which isn’t exactly the best for quick developing, tall thunderstorms
