Wintry January 23rd-27th 2026

As he / we should be. It also looks after dark, which will help with any ice accrual (no daytime sun angle, which I would think affect accrual efficiency some, especially when you get in the 28F+ temperature range).

Our best hope is that it is sleet, and if it is it will be truly awesome. Light sleet is kind of lame, especially compared to snow, but heavy sleet is legitimately cool!

Talked myself into it to the point where I’m gonna be annoyed if we don’t paste another full inch of sleet in 2-3 hours, lol.

Going to be interesting this evening to see if any residual energy can swing thru and enhance the post-fropa activity on the backside of the system over northern AL/GA and east TN. Most of the hires models have a 6 to 8 hour period where soundings spit out freezing drizzle or sleet and then eventually light snow. Very light stuff but it would add to the refreezing issues from the heavy rains we're seeing today.

From what I’ve read, that mesolow in east Alabama is helping to keep the CAD locked in stronger
Interesting, the meso low situation might explain why temps didn’t rise rapidly here once that band of heavy rain moved through 30 mins ago. The airport went from 34 to 36 and it held steady at 33 in NW Atlanta where I am. The winds also shifted from the SE to the NW now. I am concerned about flash freezing. I don’t know if these NW winds will be able to evaporate rainfall off the roadways/sidewalks in time before temps drop to and below freezing again later this evening.

Yes! Thunder snow was incredible. Will never forget that.

Absolutely that was my first time experiencing thunder snow, was in Spartanburg. The rates that came during that event was astounding. Had never seen it snow so much in a short period of time.
