Coronavirus (Stay on Topic)

So kids and most adults are fine when contracting it and recover. But we're likely carriers and are infecting the elderly without realizing it.

I think about these deaths in multiple nursing homes. How many health care workers are actually working in more than one center? Or perhaps, this is mainly visitors bringing it in before they could quarantine.

I don't know the answers, and I'm not advocating anything. Just thinking out loud.

K. Saying this is basically “all just panic” is the same thing as “not a big deal”. Maybe you forgot the part where the coronavirus has literally just gotten to the US while influenza has been around for decades (w/ slight variations every year) let that sink in for a moment before you make another narrow-minded comparison the flu virus.

Also there is some misleading aspects to these flu death numbers.....basically the CDC list flu and pneumonia together when they say X number of deaths per year from flu AND pneumonia it includes all pneumonia deaths, most caused by something other than the flu. So really deaths directly caused by the flu are a few hundred to few thousand a year....

"Meanwhile, according to the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), "influenza and pneumonia" took 62 034 lives in 2001—61 777 of which were attributed to pneumonia and 257 to flu, and in only 18 cases was flu virus positively identified. Between 1979 and 2002, NCHS data show an average 1348 flu deaths per year (range 257 to 3006).

"William Thompson of the CDC's National Immunization Program (NIP), and lead author of the CDC's 2003 JAMA article, explained that "influenza-associated mortality" is "a statistical association between deaths and viral data available." He said that an association does not imply an underlying cause of death: "Based on modelling, we think it's associated. I don't know that we would say that it's the underlying cause of death." Yet this stance is incompatible with the CDC assertion that the flu kills 36 000 people a year—a misrepresentation that is yet to be publicly" "corrected

It's good to see Charter and other telecoms offering this, considering how many households with schoolchildren and college students will be forced to do online distance learning during the next few weeks.

Thanks for posting this.

Italy's had over 1200 deaths, and not a single one is under 30. That's some crazy young resistance. Even .1% for 30-49.

That 16.6% for 80+ though. ?

I believe that 0.1 for 30-49 is one death that happened last weekend. The crazy part if that is accurate, 0-49 years is vastly under reported case wise if you look at their percentages and consider this group is most likely to come in contact with the virus. The death rate in Italy for a healthy 0-49 year old is probably <0.02.

The 70+ rate is heart breaking though.

My wife works at a Dr office so ugh, she is like a insurance coder/asst manager so she does not thankfully deal with patients directly to often. Today they had a women come in, this same women came in 2 days ago and presented flu like symptoms and tested negative for flu and the office recommend she go to the ER offered to call a ambulance as she was in rough shape and she left on her own. Today the same women comes back, she was so bad they immediately called for a ambulance, she has asthma and is in her 40's, she also tested negative for the flu again...they found out she never went to the ER the other day and the the person that drove her to the office told them her entire family was pretty sick and they had all been to DC the first weekend in March.

Wife said they nuked the places with lysol and the clorax spray they use to disinfect surfaces.....still, ugh hopefully its not Corona....be nice to have some FRIGGEN test available though.

Doesn’t Durham, Chapel Hill, and Orange County qualify as large? Or does he want Mecklenburg or Wake to do it.
Well that was just a report from sources but my guess is he was waiting for Wake or Mecklenburg. Honestly, it sounds to me like the Districts don't want that decision on them and he doesn't want it on him. If that's is the case, pretty stupid imho, I mean colleges and universities have sent students home and yet schools are not. That is so opposite of usual protocol

Nursing homes in Georgia are on lockdown. No visitors can enter and restrictions on the number of nurses available.

Roy Cooper isnt much on leadership. That much is obvious. If you cant make tough decision's like this you need to find another line of work

What does that have to do with leadership? Making the call to cancel schools statewide is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. It should be done on an "as need basis." A lot of kids depend on school for lunches, snacks, etc. Edit: And I can almost guarantee that at some point between now and next week, they will make the call to close all Public Schools, statewide. But like I said, I can only hope that those kids that come from low-income households are able to eat daily.

Thought we were done having to post these. Not to be rude, just really thought we were beyond this. All the information is out there.

And I don't believe this to be political but actually very relevant to ongoing covid-19 discussion.

Look I'm not here to argue and certainly don't have answers. However, I really hope we are not "beyond this" when it comes to what I am expressing. The loss of life is heartbreaking, but that should always be the case. I've agreed all along that it matters and care and steps need to be taken but this panic is already causing problems (and TP fights in stores) and it is IMPERATIVE that planning and response be coupled with care, responsibility, and APPROPRIATENESS. In my opinion (for what that's worth), we have a number of people in a true panic about this and panic is never helpful. If that panic continues to outgrow the virus there could be some very serious consequences when it comes to civil order. We've already created a economic issue and more are being created. Perspective is ESSENTIAL!

I'm surprised Wake hasn't closed schools yet. Wake Tech has announced they are going online only beginning Monday. We're gonna get more cases here. These RTPers fly in and out all the time like it's nothing.

So he needs to be making this decision based on square pizza and chocolate milk? I don't know what he is waiting on but if he is indeed waiting on a county official from a large school system to move him either way, thats not only poor leadership, its lack of it entirely. Based on the scorn ive taken we are on the verge of immenent death so he should probably get moving on a decision

You clearly aren't getting it. And for those kids, it's more than a square pizza and milk. Quit turning this into a political thread. There is an entirely different thread to spout your views on. And on the verge of imminent death? Really? That is what is referred to as fear-mongering. Also, you know what else is contagious? Kindness. We need to come together as a country to combat this pandemic. Not fight because we have different political views.

Do you really think school lunch is worth risking kids getting sick? All I have heard on here, especially today is how im taking this serious enough. About how aweful this has the potential of being. Ive seen several links where millions could possibly die so as an FYI, Im really not the one suggesting immenent death. I told folks to remain calm and not panic and im an asshole. I mention Roy Cooper not being able to make an important decision and I guess im an asshole for that too.

Welp, I'm in. Got the green light to wfh. Canceled all family visits and appts until further notice. Going to ride it out completely at home from here for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, we don't already have it!

No, it's not. But we don't react this way when the flu season gets bad. We are at the beginning stages of this pandemic. There are so many unknowns and to say millions will die is in my opinion, is a bit premature. That would be the worst-case scenario. And I pray it never gets to those levels. There is no reason to be spitting out numbers when we don't know the full extent of Covid. China has 1.3 billion people and why they have had a lot of deaths, it's not in the millions. And I hope it never goes that far. You're not an asshole though. It's only Friday, Roy has plenty of time to change his mind. Our governor is working with superintendents, doctors, and the state to make a decision that will protect all of us. Just like Trump, there are many moving pieces and when you are dealing with a volatile situation like this, you have to remain calm and make rational decisions.

Ha! I said the exact same thing about the flu. I got blasted for it. And of course the mere mentioning of the words calm and dont panic dont go over well with a select few here.

My concern in all this, is our inability to test and mean time to get results for those tested back for confirmation. My wife is a nurse at a teaching hospital, while they can test for certain variants of corona this one is not currently covered. We are too far behind that 8 ball and should at this point be able to do testing onsite at tertiary centers and rolling out to local hospitals in the next week with drive through types on deck. How do you contain if you do not know who is infected, where and how many.
