Coronavirus (Stay on Topic)

Mongolia did take some pretty draconian steps early on (including sealing off the border with China and banning flights from SK) so that could explain things. They're taking even more severe steps now that the first case has been confirmed.

Yea, and it turns out the border is pretty mountainous and likely very little activity between those borders. I'll give them a pass for now, but keep an eye one 'em.;)

That is so different from most states and their schools. Why colleges but not others schools? Plus the CDC I thought was saying no large gatherings? Is s school not large gathering? Sounds like the Britain president. Herd Immune??‍♂️

They are saying the CDC recommends not closing schools until it gets worse than it is now. I don't know.

Where else would this kid have gotten it? With asymptomatic transmission it's very possible this kid got it from the player.

Don't quote me on this, but the kid MAY have been on some cruise and he/his family were let off it if this chatroom is to be believed.

Edit: Yahoo even suggests it as a possibility. It would be a cruise to the Bahamas if it's true. That's interesting then, because where did the kid get it from initially?

The quote in the link seems to imply there are 2 kids.....one who went on the cruise and one who went to the NBA game. Sort of vague.

"Lacey said at a news conference that according to the information the town received, one of the students had recently returned from a cruise to the Bahamas, while another had been to an NBA game in Boston last week, and got an autograph from a player who contracted the virus."

Hmm, then if the kids were in contact, my guess would be that the kid that returned from the cruise unknowingly transmitted the virus to the kid that got an autograph, since this virus is usually mild in younger people (and in some cases I think maybe doesn't even show, especially with kids).

Probably originated from the cruise ship and again opens the possibility of several people unknowingly having this virus.

Wake County schools are not closing. They said the students and staff are not in the high risk categories, and it would be worse to close because parents would have to find childcare, and often that is with an elderly person like a grandparent. They also said it could be a financial burden on parents to miss work, and would mean healthcare professionals would be at home instead of in the hospitals. Also said kids depend on meals at school, and that it could be worse if kids were out and going other places. They said they are going by the CDC recommendation that it would not do any good to close schools yet.

Not sure how I feel about it. I think they make valid points. Then again, they canceled all athletic and extracurricular activities. If they can't have those then why is it safe to have school? I just worry because you can have the virus and not even know it, and speed it to others. We could have teachers get sick, and then not have enough teachers. And of course the kids could be spreading it to each other, and then bring it home and spread it to family members. My wife is also a special education itinerant teacher for pre-k kids, and she travels around to different schools, daycares, and even homes to teach kids. She said a lot of teachers are requesting substitutes and planning to stay home, too, so there may not be enough teachers to cover the classes. Just a terrible and difficult situation.

Brick, this might be one of the best points I've ever read from you, out of hundreds of posts (on this site and the other one) you've made.

Surely those activities have the same risk of exposure as those during the school day. The only difference is extracurricular activities aren't as regulated as those during the school day.

Everyone (not necessarily here) keeps throwing out how bad the flu is, especially the most recent H1N1 and saying this is/isn't worse. Here's where I'm at: Numbers say that between 2009-2010, 12,469 Americans died from H1N1. That sucks, but those numbers came AFTER the fact even all data was compiled That means on average 1,039 Americans died a month. I SUCK at research and math, but that's just an average and was probably higher during certain months. Have we seen those numbers? NO. Because that is a historical number compiled after the occurrence. We just started this thing. THERE IS NO WAY at this point to know what the comparison will be. 575,400 died world wide from H1N1 from 2009-2010, so 4,720/month. Have we hit that number? Nope. Will we? No way to know yet. It's still early days, so for the love of God treat it as the unknown, isolate and quarantine so it doesn't happen! Hell, no different that a hatched day 1 with 45% probs, be prepared, stop bitching and then Monday morning QB it after the fact. This rant brought to you by FB, Twitter, and message board fatigue.

I’ll add to this I’m still on the edge about believing the hype about Coronavirus and what worry’s me more is the economy and the panic from it but say we were to have as many people die from the Coronavirus as the flu and I believe this year 22,000 people in America died from the flu that number would feel like millions with the way the news is pushing it. This would incite mass panic and could overwhelm the system. We all just have to keep our wits about us keep calm and listen to the news yes but not let them make us think the worlds gonna end and it feel like in general a lot of people are letting the news get to them.

Since this thread moves fast I will post this again....basically flu death numbers are estimates, and poorly derived estimates at that according to this link....

For me, this whole situation is fascinating, (from a scientific standpoint, as well as frightening.) I am 31 and never have experienced anything like this. My dad had scarlet fever as a kid, he was born just before the Polio vaccine. Both of my parents lived through the AIDS and HIV crisis. In someway's I was ignorant to think we would never face something so terrifying in my lifetime. Having said all that, I'm somewhat optimistic that with all the advances in science, healthcare, and technology, that we can kick this virus to the curb. America may have its issues, but when it comes to healthcare we still in the top 5. I just hope we can all put aside our political differences. Everyone in America deserves the best care possible, regardless of their financial situation or their health insurance... or lack thereof.

This is nonsense - I've been following the developments in the UK and they've been taking serious actions as far as closings, cancelling sporting events, and (starting next week) banning large public gatherings.

I'm certainly not making it up. It's everywhere I'm reading.

In effect, his government has said that mass closures will not halt the outbreak, and that exposing a large segment of the population will help build immunity and limit future infections.

All sounds reliable from the last 24-48 hours

The British government has repeatedly said it does not believe that banning large-scale gatherings and closing schools -- like Italy, France, Germany and Spain have done -- would be effective in preventing the spread of the disease.

This comes despite the fact that parts of the British Isles, including the Republic of Ireland and Scotland (which is in the UK but has a separate healthcare system), are now emulating their continental neighbors.

You said the UK is "not closing anything", which simply isn't the case.

Here's the text of the bill that the House passed overnight; it looks like one of the main provisions is 14 days of paid sick leave for employees, as well as three months of paid emergency leave. Apparently new tax credits are supposed to offset these costs to employers (but it doesn't say how companies are supposed to meet these new payroll costs and keep their businesses afloat until tax filing time comes around next year).

EDIT: the sick leave/emergency leave mandates only apply to employers with 50 or more employees.

So we have closed schools, offices, sporting events, and pretty much everything else but you go into a grocery store and it’s like a herd of cattle being shoveled in and out the same door all grabbing the same grocery carts and going through the same registers all piled in lines grabbing the same food that someone else put up. The same people that can’t do these other things that have been canceled and closed. Everyone’s gotta eat so what else can you do I know. But that isn’t going to help the spreading situation AT ALL. Not to mention there aren’t even cart wipes Or hand sanitizer pumps because everyone’s stealing them and/or using them up. I’m a grocery manager for the busiest grocery store in my area so I have seen this literally all week.

So far 2700( we know that isn't close to accurate) confirmed cases and only 4 critical in the US, so at this point we are no where near heading to the track Italy took. Germany heading the same road we are.

I am sure it more than 10 critical, 3 of the deaths we just learned about yesterday happened a week ago....if we can get reliable widespread testing down these numbers will skyrocket.

We small business with only a few employees are really going to need help if this gets bad. Leave it to the politicians to completely miss the need. Course what do they know about real conditions, most of them have been in government most of their life.

That may be true, we will just have to wait and see, but the lack of overrun is promising at this point.

Yeah I seriously doubt we see anything like Italy and I seriously doubt we see the doomsday scenarios some people are worried about.

First two coronavirus caused deaths in Alabama?

Indeed, hopefully this gets addressed (e.g., the payroll tax cut) in the Senate version of the bill next week.

Agree. When I read it was for businesses with 50 or more employees I was greatly disappointed.

Ok, bad expression I guess. When compared to the US and it's European counterparts they are taking a vastly different approach that "could" lead to significantly more infections. They are closing less institutions like schools, government, etc. Therefore, I think they should be #1 on the ban list of countries who are early in the outbreak. That is the main takeaway. Boris is going to be remembered for this unique approach, good or bad.

FWIW, I got a notification from FEMA yesterday regarding my availability. It was sent to those of us that ETS’d in the last five years. It was wondering if we would be willing to act as surge response if needed due to personnel being taxed beyond the abilities of the agency.

EDIT: For clarification, this was only for certain personnel that met certain qualifications and still had valid certifications.

I assume medic? I wish that path had been placed in front of me. Jonny Kim was one of if not the most respected guys I served with. Those medics are bad ass man.

Yep. I’m still Combat Lifesaver certified along with National Registry and NC. I have ACLS, BTLS-Advanced, ATLS, PALS, Critical Care, Tactical Paramedic, and Flight Paramedic.

Not to mention USAR.
