But look how many people the flu kills every year  At least we are not hearing that any more.

I think Trump will announce an emergency declaration this afternoon activating FEMA and other organizations.
20,000 flu deaths in 2019 /2020. 136 kids. Over 350,000 hospitalized. Nothing to see here.....

You don't seem to get it. It's not about where things are now. It's about preventing things from getting worse. There is a vaccine for the flu. There is not one for this virus. This virus is deadlier than the flu. It appears it can be spread faster than the flu, too. It's all about preventing things from getting out of hand.

The thinking is that Trump will invoke the Stafford Act, which would give the executive branch broader powers to take direct actions.

Also, see swine flu in 2009. We didn’t shut the world down for that one, either.

I'm not at saying this is the flu or anything, but the reaction to the swine flu is a bad analogy. The Swine flu got into the US quickly and quickly stopped the crazy rumors coming out of Mexico. This one was able to steam in a closed country for almost two months before it got out.

We just got told to work remotely if at all possible. However, our field guys can’t really do that. Went out to lunch today and the normally packed restaurant was half full.

I don't think this one was only in China for that long. I think we will find it has been here much longer than we think.

Oh I agree completely. But the Swine flu didnt have time to fester media wise and social media was in its infancy. So you can't really compare reactions side by side.

"Between 160 million and 214 million people in the U.S. could be infected over the course of the epidemic. As many as 200,000 to 1.7 million people could die. The calculations based on the CDC’s scenarios suggested, 2.4 million to 21 million people in the U.S. could require hospitalization, potentially crushing the nation’s medical system, which has only about 925,000 staffed hospital beds."

If this is true then this is just downright scary.

True. You could argue that if swine flu were to break-out these days, we would have the same panic.
I disagree. One can not compare this virus to any other. This started in Dec. when all is said and done this virus will kill more if it keeps coming back like the flu. Some think this virus will disappear. Well it’s not going to. Plus I’m not worried about the virus. It’s the economic impact that should make everyone on edge and pay attention.

Just to clarify while yes there is a vaccine for the flu , its a total guess every year . I got the flu shot this year and got the flu two months later

Social Media makes everything seem like a bigger deal than it really is
China does not really have social media like we do. So why did they shut down entire cities? All the elders in Italy that are dying. Did social media make that happen? Social media has its lies and disadvantages but it also has its positives and advantages. Such as making us aware what is really happening in some countries.

As of March 13th, 2020

Aside from critically ill patients who are hospitalized, the physician said the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is only approving testing for people who have been exposed to someone who has already tested positive or who has traveled to one of the five heavily impacted countries outside the US in the past 14 days, which mirrors CDC guidelines.

"It's insanity," said the physician, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

There are not even tests on hand to use if a patient was approved for testing, the doctor said.

"Even if the patient were around and exposed to someone coughing, sick, sneezing, I cannot give them a coronavirus test," the doctor said. "We are being crippled by our department of public health and the CDC on our ability to combat this pandemic."

The doctor said state and federal health officials "need to loosen the criteria on testing" and "allow us doctors to use our discretion to decide who should be tested."

You have about a 50% chance of developing the flu if you get the vaccine. You have 0% chance of avoiding this virus if you are infected.

I think that is a good assessment, especially as regards FB and Twitter. Of course, folks like myself and others starting threads like this, as well as each post in here, add more to it. However, this thread was a necessity because there were already a good number of posts about it cluttering other threads and someone else would have created this at some point. I think it is good there's a thread here about it.

Delta just announced that they have more cancellations for next month then they have bookings for flights...

Grounding over 300 planes and reducing their flight schedule by 40% which is more than after 911...
Now who wants to say this is no big deal?

While this virus isn't anything like the flu, I think there is one similarity that I've seen talked about (including a supposed Atlanta CDC epidemiologist, but I think this man is legit as he's rarely around this Braves chatroom, but he's showed up talking about it), and it's involving the making of vaccines.

I think because there can be different versions of the coronavirus, they're going to have to try to select the genotypes that they think are most likely for the season when they are done making the vaccines, and everyone is wondering if the next fall is going to be enough time to make a vaccine as well.

Social media has informed me that I don’t have much to worry about. I will still take the precautions , but I’m more worried about a meteor hitting earth than the virus.

This thread here is very level headed so far from whatever you feel about this virus. It should be applauded.

My point being THE FLU IS STILL HERE! Its actually killed 20,000+ people. Not a projection but a FACT! Understand? So yeah im still talking about the flu......

Oh it definitely would. There were posts saying 10-20% CFR in Mexico and how it would become as bad or worse than the 1918 flu H1N1 strain because most had no immunity to it.

I remember because it freaked me out and I was glued to it.
