Coronavirus (Stay on Topic)

Yes lets open everything up and watch this magically go away.

It won't go away, but if these anti-viral drugs prove effective they could let things open back up, tell the elderly to stay at home or minimize going out for another month or two and then anyone who does get sick use the anti-viral drugs to save their life. That way you get the economy back open, build herd immunity up quickly and those who come down with this can get treated quickly with the anti-viral drugs. This is, of course, assuming they are as effective as initial results seem to indicate.

Hopefully he will not lift the restrictions at the end of 15 days. Talk about mixed messages! That would be sending the wrong signal. Trump finally has gotten really serious over the 7-10 days or so after having downplayed it for so long. Listen to Dr. Fauci and others who are much more qualified to make this decision. Don’t be wishy washy and go back in the other direction, please! We need to flatten the curve.

The anti malaria med and others are going to need more time to trial it before it can be approved for this.

That to me is a disaster waiting to happen. How many people are going to become infected in the first 10 days and need medical care? Want to talk about running out of hospital space. Also do we even have enough of the meds available to do that?

They can find cure for this. But not cancer. Strange
Let me respond to this also,
I'm in my early 60s, been self employed most of my life as a hands on builder. Not to long ago I woke up one day with a sore throat, 2 days later I was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer. Surgeon said surgery was not an option and my best course of action was chemotherapy and radiation. After max doses of each over several months, my PET scan shortly after my treatment, showed no signs of cancer. The radiation cremated my throat, but I'm cancer free! So I can say there is a cure. And with all that being said, I have been tagging along with a lot of you guys for many years on these weather boards looking for the big one. I come in here and it's like family. Good or bad, I enjoy all the input and I wish the powers at be would extend an invitation out to Mack and get him back. I miss his input.

We are supposed to have millions upon millions being shipped to the US by Bayer and other companies. They are an easily produced generic drug. I agree we simply can't keep everything closed for months on end. We shut down now to flatten the curve but we can't keep it closed forever. Finding a life-saving treatment has to be the #1 solution right now.

If we get effective treatment then states and cities can shut down and open on their own time frame (like they've been doing already). This would allow the whole country not to be shut down.

I think one of my biggest fears is as soon as they ease the restrictions, there are school systems chomping at the bit to open back up. I know things eventually will reopen, but I think there may be a rush to get kids back before the end of this school year. Our local school district is already hinting at doing that.

Here's the thing. To eliminate this virus and prevent it from spreading unchecked in the USA we would need to do several things. Close off ALL borders completely outside of trade until a vaccine is developed (12-18 months). We would also need to test every single american, quarantine every person that tests positive for at least 14 days and keep doing this until there are 0 cases in the US or wait 18 months for a vaccine to be widely available (and that might be ineffective if this mutates or a different strain enters the US). These are logistically impossible to do to eliminate the virus. Since we can't eliminate it then the decision is going to be made at some point to open the economy back up. What if you open it up 2 months from now and it starts spreading again, do you shut it all down again? To me you have to look at the totality of human suffering and people losing everything, becoming depressed and committing suicide, families struggling to feed themselves, the potential for a rise in violence due to all these factors, etc. just isn't worth it long term IMO. I'm fine with a short term shutdown but at some point the tough decision is going to need to be made to decide if we risk millions of people losing it all or go all in on some of these drugs and ride it out while using the drugs to save lives.

If we have an effective treament like this anti-viral drug then once we have sufficient amounts of it on hand then open things up, tell the elderly to minimize public appearances and let the economy get back to normal. It's simply not feasible to keep the economy shut down until a vaccine is developed, especially if that vaccine ends up being ineffective or a different strain of the virus spreads.

Yeah crazy, we need to go the other direction if we really want to keep a lid on this thing.....a few weeks of adversity and people are ready to fold....they just dont understand the consequences are bad enough now, if we dont keep the peddle down and things go way bad then we end up right back here anyways and lose 10's of thousands of people.

Well a fear when it comes to schools. What happens if schools opens back up and this virus runs rampant through the school system. Only takes one asymptotic student to cause something bad.

Trump should absolutely not lift the recommended restrictions at the end of the 15 days. That’s way too early and also would be very confusing. Don’t send mixed messages. I’m very confident Dr. Fauci would be against this. Listen to folks like him. Enough of the wishy washiness! He finally saw the light and got serious. Don’t reverse now for goodness sakes.

The thing that worries me is we are still (at least) a year away from a vaccine. We can stay isolated and probably keep the infection rate low, but as soon as we open up (less isolation) the infection rate will spike up. I know we're trying to keep the curve down but also can we isolate as much as we're doing now for more than a year. I think something will have to give; maybe redirect resources to retirement home, older communities, and even older (and with underlying conditions) individuals. This could happen after we have sufficient medical supplies, and maybe some medication to help with the treatment. **just a hard situation...

I’d say go with whatever Dr. Fauci recommends. He gives me more confidence and has more credibility than any other individual involved in this. He’s very smart and experienced and is not motivated by political considerations.

There simply is no way we can keep a lid on this thing without shutting down and destroying the economy for 12-18 months. Millions of lives will be destroyed when there is no work, no way to feed their families, violence spikes due to people getting desperate, etc. which will have impacts for years and years to come. At some point soon we will need to lift things and let the economy get back to normal and use drugs to treat those who need help, build herd immunity, etc. The shutdown right now is fine for a few weeks to buy some additional time but once we have the drugs needed and if they are proven to be effective then things need to go back to normal or else it will get very ugly as people get desperate.

All nurses/medical people in Wilkes County are now being given emergency worker papers to bypass national guard or police to get to work. Seems like this rollout is occurring slowly for all essential businesses just give it time to reach yours.

Well you may be right. My manager of 20yrs just told me they are drafting letters for us as well.

Michigan just issued shelter in place order from March 24th- April 13th

All these locations issuing these restrictions that go well past the initial 15 day guidelines from the government would make me think it’s very unlikely that government recommendations will be lessened. Probably at least another 15 day extension ya think?
