The argument I'm reading this morning is money in my pocket vs lives saved. It's easy to see where everyone stands.
Its ok to be concerned about the economy as well as peoples lives. You seem to be rather enjoying yourself in the stock market forum right? Might as well put a little money in your pocket during the panic sell off right?

I wouldn't expect you to see the difference but you did remind me to put you on ignore.

Call me inhumane I don’t care. So we have roughly 30k infected and around 390 deaths. In other words sacrifice 330 million for 390 people. Let’s make more kids go hungry and raise poverty for those numbers. So 330 million are to sacrifice for the few.

You arent looking forward, just backward. The infections will continue to increase from here.. so no it isn't 390 people. This is why people like you dont make these decisions

From a rural background I understand 100%. But I think we should let the government mass produce healthcare stuff before our hospitals end up like New York City. This is not like a tornado but more like a hurricane that we can actually track and predict better. Big difference.

Ok. So let’s say there’s no vaccine this coming fall and it comes back do we shut down everything again? Added With the flu we will have no choice right

In several ways, this is one of the worst posts I've seen in this thread.

I would rather we keep the death toll low and take these measures than overwhelm our healthcare system and likely destroy our country. Reason being is people would get desperate and violent in order to get care or give others they care about care if they need it, which given the contagion it would go over worse. After that Martial law would be imposed and people would resist due to lack of trust in the government. It is certain more would die if we just didn't care. No matter how you look at it, we're in trouble economy-wise, and this route is the best we can take without killing tens of thousands or more.

I get the nation falling apart might be a bit extreme, but Americans are already in a panic, and get enough out of order and a situation like that could happen.

I don't know what happens in the Fall... I don't think anyone does. But your solution for now of saying only 339 people have died, let's just move on with business as usual is not a good one

16k have died from the flu and we move on business as usual. There's tons of unanswered questions with this, there's no easy answer but I fear many do not realize what the long term effects of thousands losing their jobs will be.

Tennessee now at 505 cases (up from 371 Saturday, 228 Friday) - should be noted that 85% of cases are younger than 60 years-old, and it's hitting 20-somethings the hardest...

There is no off switch to stop this at 390 deaths. Imperial College London, the gold standard of people who study such things, put the number of US deaths at 2.2 million, if nothing is done to contain it. This study is what finally got our president to start taking this seriously. We are still woefully under testing for this disease. We better hope it magically disappears, because our response to it so far has been astonishingly sad.

Wonder if this is because the young people seem to be going out and disregarding the social distancing and are getting a high “viral load” thus making this more severe?

Some of you don’t deserve to comment anymore making statements like this. You’re worried about your pockets more than the health of those around you.

There has to be a balance found between what keeps citizens safe and keeping the states and country up and running. Its also apparent that some states/cities are doing a better job of this than others. Take NY asa prime example. The governer of NY is doing a good job working with the federal government. The mayor of NY is an a-hole with little in the way of leadership. At some point in the very near future drastic measures will be needed in that city. Its obvious that there is a high level of ignorance contributing to what is quickly becoming a serious problem

I think a lot of the "young people" are taking their cues from "older adults" who aren't taking it serious. They just happen to be more social at that age and spreading it to each other.

I look at it as what if a family member died of this. Is loss of money worth the death of loved ones? What if it was one of your loved ones? Is the loss of money worth your loved ones life?

2.2 million? This cant be serious

If people don’t work to get income, it is going to affect there health also. Have to look at it from both sides.
The whole point is to shut everything down for 2-3 weeks so we can clean everything up and then get back to work. Just rip the bandaid off and get it over with. There’s no way to get around the economy issue so trying to down play the virus to make yourself feel better about getting back to work is not the answer. And that’s what those who are worried about the economy are trying to do.

Dr. John Boockvar, Lenox Hill Hospital, sounds the alarm, saying that New York City hospital ICUs are about to be completely overrun with coronavirus patients.

In the video the doctor says they aren't equipped.

@Matthew70 's low death rate is about to go up.

Try this one on for size. Have no idea how reliable the date is. I only post it for info purposes. Click on individual states. For NC, it says the deadline to act to prevent healthcare overload is March 28-April 2.

Anyway, is there anything to suggest the rumors of a shut down in NC are true?
My CEO pretty much told us that unless your some random hydraulic worker in rural Tennessee then the shutdown doesn’t really mean much because non-essential jobs are already closed (khols/belk). He said the only other way the lockdown would matter is if your a young kid who likes to travel late evening or overnight for fun then you will be stopped. This is for most rural areas for the south/east. If your in Charlotte or something then of course there’s more non-essential jobs that could close like dog groomer or something. Not trying to brush off the severity of a shutdown but it’s mostly just economic loss esp for non-essential.

If/when this situation is past the critical point we'll hopefully properly analyze the numbers and the underlying data within those numbers so we can make much more rational and justified decisions in the future.

Headline - A county in Georgia had a 75% increase in cases.

Data - went from 3 to 4

Headline - there are x number more cases today.

Data - y number of people have been tested thus showing an increased number of cases.

Headline - x% of people are dying.

Data - How many people really have/had it, how many of the ones who died had underlying medical conditions which were contributory to their immunal weakness and how many would've passed anyway in the next few months. How many didn't receive proper medical care.

Doesn't minimize the fact caution is the word for now as we just don't have a true grasp on the situation other than based on current limited data the death rate is unacceptable, this is apparently highly contagious, and we can't have our health care system overwhelmed.

Numbers are numbers, I personally hate to see them being used to say or imply this is the apocalypse.

Yes it's serious, no it's not the end of the world, hopefully..

Shutting everything down for two weeks isn’t going to do enough to stop it

S.C. updated totals only 195. That’s not bad we was at 170 something yesterday

I heard it from a bird.
I got it from my CEO. Evidentially Gov. Cooper is allowing businesses to apply as to whether they are essential or not first. Step 2 is restrict travel times which again won’t affect most people or the elderly.
