Quarantines are like speed bumps, they are just trying to keep the rate of spread at a level that prevents overloading hospitals etc. There may be several quarantines etc put in place and lifted every few weeks in the same areas over the next 6-12 month to try and control the spread . People have to remember these quarantines do not mean you don't go to work, or that you cant go to the store etc. It just means they want you to limit travel locally and interaction with others as much as possible, they also shut down things that allow for large public gatherings like movies, sporting events, concerts, no weddings and funerals etc.....they also try to prevent people from different areas traveling to other areas. In Italy the biggest problem they had were thousands of people self evacuating the hard hit Lombardy region for other parts of Italy, this is exactly what they do not want.

I suspect we start to see widespread school/University closures across the country, lots of canceled concerts, sporting events happening with no crowds etc...

Washington has reported 2 more deaths but more worrisome is that these two were at two different nursing homes and they now have positive cases of Corona in at least 10 different nursing homes....

The nursing homes just tear at you. They are by far the most in danger and have to depend on others in a normal day.

Yeah that makes sense... so the quarantine is basically to act as a “speed bump” to slow things down temporarily before it ramps back up but at the cost of hurting the economy and businesses. Fortunately I work at a job where I can work remote if necessary but if I worked a job that paid hourly I would be very concerned about how I would pay the bills in the long run.

Heres an article. Just slowed it down barely. This virus is so contagious there was no stopping it now that we can monday morning QB the response. If we dont take those measures we are putting lots of elderly people in grave danger. I sure dont want to see that happen but mass quarantine is only a short term roadblock.

Didn't see it in here although it's been hours since it was official.

An Atlanta area Waffle House employee tested positive for coronavirus. That Waffle House has closed.

Yeah, quarantine methods were useless after 60% of cases on the cruise ship were asymptomatic if it is contagious as said and Italy is proof of that. You don't export cases like they have with only ~10k infected.

Interesting article, thanks for sharing. So is it worth it to shut the economy down for a month and harm local businesses and hourly workers when the quarantine really only slightly delays the spread of it? I’m sure the people making these decisions probably have a lot more data and info available to make decisions on but to me it seems like quarantines just delay the inevitable a few days or weeks while harming the economy at the same time.

All of my grandparents are gone but the church I go to is 80% or more people who are 60+ and would be in the danger zone for this so I’m pretty concerned about them. We also have a few folks in nursing homes who I’m really concerned about.

So I should avoid the store, the mall , church , work , my kids baseball games ?? What a joke let’s just shut life down

I am going about my business but what do you recommend? Don’t cancel anything? Just go about life and see what happens? Just advise elderly to stay home? We don’t go near the elderly? Or just don’t worry about it? I am not meaning to sound like an ass. Just wondering what you recommend?

Everyone worried about missing games and vacations are lucky. My wife works with the elderly of our community and she is near tears thinking about losing up to 15 percent of these people. There has never been anything in her time doing this job that has been as big of a threat to her people as this.

The CDC has a section of their website devoted to these questions:

Here’s something to think about. We know early indications are that children are not showing many symptoms or just common cold symptoms who contract the Coronavirus. If schools are cancelled guess who watches the kids while the parents work? Yep, the grandparents, the highest risk age group. Anyone see the attempts at quarantine and school closings unintentionally making this worse for the elderly?

Just heard from a reliable source that the NC DPI instructed every school system in the state to have a plan in place by this Friday in the event that school closures are necessary. My source is inside the Winston-Salem Forsyth County system. The gist is, they (WSFS) are making preparations for online school for all students by March 20th (i.e. they're not expecting a need to close schools before then). There's a certain threshold for the number of cases within the school system that would trigger school closures. Students who don't have the necessary hardware and internet connection at home will be provided everything they need to continue school at home. He said that as of now they are preparing for a two-week closure.
Interesting that Duke is going to online courses beginning March 23, extended Spring Break through 22nd.... timeframe matches up to NC DPI info. My wife's a teacher, no news yet but gonna do a little prying tomorrow

Guilford County Schools superintendent is supposed to give an update tomorrow morning.

This is absolutely freaking crazy ... went to Publix to get some toothpaste and a 12 pack of toilet paper ... none on the shelf of either ... went to CVS, none on the self there ... both tell me their warehouses are empty ...Corona virus does not rot teeth or cause poops ... this is exponential panic ... headed to the ammo store, I guess ...
