Misc Cold Season Complaining

I truly sympathize with the mods. Main thread is starting to get clogged with redundant posts (which honestly is a sign this board is thriving) and also commentary and non-related topics. Y’all got a tough job!
Funny you say this, we've been having a lengthy detailed discussion today about moderating, guidelines, etc. It's a challenge haha

I’ve tried to moderate myself by not posting anything redundant (same loops/time frames) but a lot of times we are all rapid-fire posting as runs are coming in.

Man the years have taken a toll on me. I used to find so much joy in these weenie runs but over the years I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been let down by an ensemble mean snowfall map. And in 2017 I can remember 6 hours before the storm came I was supposed to get 6+ and got a backend dusting. I’m cooked. Cautiously pessimistic about it all. But this time will be different I’m sure.. Prove me wrong, weather gods. I’m begging you
Yep. Feb 2014 was the one that did it for me. That storm was rock solid, even the conservative mets were trying to get their forecasts caught up the morning of. 6-12 was the consensus for us with 8-14 becoming more common. I had to struggle to get 3 inches of slop and I remember some areas just to my east couldn't muster more than a dusting of slop. Dec 2017 and 2018 only threw gas on the flames of doubt. 2018 we were in a pre-called "state of emergency for historic winter storm." But... another warm nose delivered a sleety sloppy 3in mess.

Here’s the radar from that night. Blue returns on top of me for 8 hours and all I got was rain. I was in Simpsonville. Heartbreaker IMG_0736.jpeg

Me and you both are about 15-20 miles too far south for real snow since 2014. Lately you need to be from Pickens, across the GSP area, over to Gaffney. Anderson, Fountain Inn, Jonesville and Woodruff have not been getting anything but scraps from the bigger storms.
Pickens is an interesting area. I actually do a bit better here a few miles away than Pickens most of the time. I think it has to do with a mini downslopping pocket, with Pickens a touch closer to the mountains; it seems to be harder to get the cold over that way. But in general, I would say Western upstate has not been kind. You really have to be East of I-26 now.
It is even colder after that. All-time record cold in fact. If it happened several states would have their coldest temp in recorded history. -15 here would be 10+ degrees lower than anything I have ever seen.
Not sure about Jonesville but the state record is -19 at Caeser's Head from Jan 85. Sassafras did not have a weather station then. MBY reached -14 that night near Dacusville. But don't worry too much; these numbers we're seeing likely won't be anywhere close to verifying.
Most people cannot afford to be this well prepared though. Cold like this will be devastating here in the southeast. This would make Helene look like a picnic.
It'll be like all those 120 degree days we get every summer!

That's what happens after 3 years of nothing to track.
Lol so true. We are not just starved for real snow but even starved for digital fantasy snow and cold. I would wager all of us have the same reactions the moment we see it. We are all like a lost soul in the sahara...even if you know the water is likely a mirage we still run full speed to it. And no matter how many times we eat sand we run as fast as we can to the next one. It's a sickness really lol

Yeah I try to not post in the January thread unless it's actually something model related

But dang... This is still over a week away
It's redundant and likely tiresome to hear folks repeat the obvious..that its a long ways off and don't take it literally but it's important for ones mental health to keep it real. Even as someone who doesn't give much weight at all to anything past day 5...much less 7...its hard to keep expectations low given so much noise in the models and unusual amount of agreement being shown in the ensembles on not just cold but rare cold.

Oh I know I mean I did always hear as a kid growing up in Alabama that the big ones always showed up way in advance

But on the other side the last two times we had temps near zero here it barely snowed and I think that alone is gonna keep my expectations down

I’m gonna remember all this in summer when people start complaining about those rooting for hurricanes … can’t have it both ways!!!
As other's have said, what people root for has no bearing on what happens. If there was some guy out there pulling for a cane in Sept or a blizzard in March 93 its not his fault. Every type of weather can cause havoc and hurt. It is VERY foggy out tonight; I am sure that fog causes lots of accidents and death. People beg for rain all the time and rain causes an untold number of wrecks and deaths (floods, property damage, etc). Weather is a part of our lives, and variety is not only fun to learn about and watch; its a necessary reality of the weather cycles on our planet. Its not going to be 70 with no more than light rains and steady breezes all the time all over the planet. Enjoying some weather extremes doesn't mean a person wants other people to be hurt or killed, and certainly doesn't cause it.

I agree , which is why I said I’ll keep an eye out for those who root for this but then call out those who root for severe storms or hurricanes

This BS ain’t happening
How many times are gonna look at unheard of cold on the models 7-10 days out, then come game time, it’s like 2 days of 10 degrees below normal temp!
Go ISU

The "rooting for weather" griping is so exhausting and also silly, tbh. Nobody's interest in weather has any bearing on anything. And it also doesn't indicate anything about anyone's character.
The only exception i'll take is probably nocturnal tornado outbreaks which just bring my mood down. i hate them. there used to be a company that did weather related t-shirt designs that did sales with escalating discounts correlating to thunderstorm outlooks that i always thought was in poor taste

Some on here were harassing me for rooting for a hurricane in October to drag cooler air down here.
That's what I'm saying. It's silly to harass anybody for their interest in any particular weather phenomenon, particularly on a weather forum! 🤣

I don't disagree with you. I hate them too. I just don't see the point of rehashing the same argument over and over multiple times per year.
