Wintry April Fools? (1-2) Surprise Storm

This is likely the first time since 1982 & 1983 that accumulating snow has occurred in back-to-back Aprils somewhere in central NC.

April 8 1982 & Apr 18-19 1983 being the 2 storms of interest from the early-mid 1980s.

To jog everyone's memory w/ last year...

Winds are starting to pick up along the coast, Piney Island is reporting sustained winds of 28 gusting to 37 with a peak gust of 39mph. I expect to see a few places along the coast gust 45-55mph as the coastal deepens and moves by.

Lol we’re literally going from this, to a late spring pattern next weekend, well at least for the SE, could see some strong pulse storms next sunday if the gfs is right in the Carolinas, may get my first shelfie of the year

Looking at PWS obs on Weather Underground, it seems there was a pretty sharp cutoff in precip amounts in the Charlotte area. Folks on the N/NW side of town had little to no measurable precip while SE of there saw around a half inch of qpf which also coincides well with the 1-2" bullseye on Eric's map. It would seem the snow ratios in this event were quite low as expected, maybe around 4:1 or 5:1 if I had to guess.

Bring it on, I'm ready for 70s and 80s with thunderstorm chances! Tired of this cold rain, I've had too much of it this winter.

Good April averages 9 80 + degree days at RDU let’s get it. Mean max is over 86 for April as well so let’s hit it... been 5 months of the exact same weather.

View attachment 18428 For me that award goes to the January 3rd, 2018 storm. Radar looked like this but snow barely made it up to Orangeburg/Sumter. Got about 10 minutes of flurries and had to wait 2 weeks until I was rewarded with a whole 20 minutes of snow and sleet mixed with rain

This is OT but man I remember the radar deal. In fact, about 15 maybe 20 minutes to the south of me had a dusting of snow (confirmed by a former family friend). Here was nothing. Well maybe flurries when I was out and about.

Not OT: The picture of 1-2" of snow is a total win for this time of the year and honestly impressive.

Wow the coastal is really wrapped up nicely... I'm seeing winds of 96mph in that intense band and quite a bit of lightning. Here's a look at it from WV, impressive storm.

Yeah was just about to post this, I know it's not at the surface but this isn't too far from the radar site either so I'm sure some serious gust

Congrats Raleigh area. Some of the coldest temps on the entire east coast right now. And colder than most of the lower 48 minus a few remote locations.

Why do these coastals never come inland? So none of this nasty weather would have happened today. Coldest april day since 1915, no one alive today knows what an april day like this feels like.... in company of only the first year on Raleigh record which is 1887 over 130 years ago.

Held in the mid 30s most of the day...popped up to 41 once the rain ended. Really impressive for April

My chase round up. Left N. GA this morning around 5am. Knew it was a longshot, but daughter wanted one last chance to see snow since we haven't had anything in Dahlonega since Dec 2017. So after reading here and looking at nam and hrrr, and nws gsp, decide best bet was to go to Gville / Spartanburg and then check conditions and this forum, and then decide whether to go east or west or continue on 85. Odd thing is when went past Simpsonville, it cleared up, got bone dry, and the temp rose to a scorching 95 degrees, weird. Anyway, saw a couple of flakes north of Greenville, but then it stopped. Decided to go toward Charlotte, but felt like it was a losing battle. could see moisture east of 85, and dry sky west of 85, so just decided to take my chances and go right at next exit, which turned out to be a good choice. Soon after turning, it started raining and coming down hard. Based on what I'd been reading I felt the heavy rates would pull down the cold air. i suspect the temp started out in the low 40s but after the precip it got down to at least 33 according to the phone app. Sure enough, soon started to see those telltale splotches on the windshield, then it just turned into a full on heavy heavy snow with big huge flakes. Took this picture at a gas station just outside of York SC. and as you know an iphone se just doesn't do it justice. after enjoying that for about 20 minutes, we continued on to Rock Hill where we saw accumulation on grass, dirt, and cars. Then up through Charlotte where we ate lunch while it was lightly sleeting in Kannapolis. Saw frozen precip for probably 3 hours. It was a good way to close out the year. I know i said it before but thanks to those on here who started tracking this early on.

Does anyone know if Charlotte officially got measurable snow/sleet? If so, it would be only the 2nd measured in April in the last 100 years.
I wish i had paid more attention. I'm going to guess they did, but can't verify. I know i saw snow accumulation South of there in Rock Hill and beyond, and then some very slight sleet accumulation in Concord/Kannapolis. but didn't really see anything going through Charlotte because was back on 85 with the traffic and all.

You picked a good route in the end. Although, I could have saved you some time and told you to skip my hometown of Simpsonville. Snow avoids this area at all costs. Rock Hill was a great spot to be in. Good job, Dad!
