Wintry April Fools? (1-2) Surprise Storm

Here's a preliminary snowfall map I created for today's event in NC. Totals up to nearly 2" were recorded in Union County with a secondary maximum in snow/sleet totals further NE near Troy & Asheboro.

Lmao I would of probably done better back at my house in Salisbury

This is likely the first time since 1982 & 1983 that accumulating snow has occurred in back-to-back Aprils somewhere in central NC.

April 8 1982 & Apr 18-19 1983 being the 2 storms of interest from the early-mid 1980s.

To jog everyone's memory w/ last year...

Winds are starting to pick up along the coast, Piney Island is reporting sustained winds of 28 gusting to 37 with a peak gust of 39mph. I expect to see a few places along the coast gust 45-55mph as the coastal deepens and moves by.

Lol we’re literally going from this, to a late spring pattern next weekend, well at least for the SE, could see some strong pulse storms next sunday if the gfs is right in the Carolinas, may get my first shelfie of the year

Looking at PWS obs on Weather Underground, it seems there was a pretty sharp cutoff in precip amounts in the Charlotte area. Folks on the N/NW side of town had little to no measurable precip while SE of there saw around a half inch of qpf which also coincides well with the 1-2" bullseye on Eric's map. It would seem the snow ratios in this event were quite low as expected, maybe around 4:1 or 5:1 if I had to guess.

A look at our coastal.

Bring it on, I'm ready for 70s and 80s with thunderstorm chances! Tired of this cold rain, I've had too much of it this winter.

Good April averages 9 80 + degree days at RDU let’s get it. Mean max is over 86 for April as well so let’s hit it... been 5 months of the exact same weather.

View attachment 18428 For me that award goes to the January 3rd, 2018 storm. Radar looked like this but snow barely made it up to Orangeburg/Sumter. Got about 10 minutes of flurries and had to wait 2 weeks until I was rewarded with a whole 20 minutes of snow and sleet mixed with rain

This is OT but man I remember the radar deal. In fact, about 15 maybe 20 minutes to the south of me had a dusting of snow (confirmed by a former family friend). Here was nothing. Well maybe flurries when I was out and about.

Not OT: The picture of 1-2" of snow is a total win for this time of the year and honestly impressive.

Wow the coastal is really wrapped up nicely... I'm seeing winds of 96mph in that intense band and quite a bit of lightning. Here's a look at it from WV, impressive storm.

Yeah was just about to post this, I know it's not at the surface but this isn't too far from the radar site either so I'm sure some serious gust

Congrats Raleigh area. Some of the coldest temps on the entire east coast right now. And colder than most of the lower 48 minus a few remote locations.

Why do these coastals never come inland? So none of this nasty weather would have happened today. Coldest april day since 1915, no one alive today knows what an april day like this feels like.... in company of only the first year on Raleigh record which is 1887 over 130 years ago.
