Misc 2019 Banter & Friendly Conservation

I’m watching some show showing these idiots living in Alaska . Current temp is -5 and there’s like four feet of snow on the ground . What idiot would want to live there ?

Look at that 50/50 and AK ridge

The 500 hPa anomalies show a similar picture, depicting my personal favorite pattern: Huge North Pacific block coupled to a deep vortex in the vicinity of SE or Atlantic Canada coupled to an active subtropical jet in the strong NINO winter of 1972-73 = sheared, suppressed southern stream waves zonally propagating from east-west & overrunning cold-extremely cold air masses deposited into North America from Siberia and the rest of the Arctic leading to a large expanse of snow/ice in a vast majority of the southern US. Imo, it's the best recipe to get a classic southern slider that implicates the entire southernwx board.

Noob Question. What is a 50/50? I have seen it mention several times but never sure what it was exactly.
I think it’s pretty much a big Low spinning in S/E Canada acting as a pseudo -NAO keeping our HP locked in

A term that refers to a strong low pressure that sets up near 50 north and 50 west. It is a good location for creating confluence over the northeast. That acts to suppress the flow and keep storm systems south and lock in high pressure over the northeast that can funnel cold into the storm.

My Yellow Jackets lose to Gardner Webb in the non conference then beat Wake Forest and Syracuse to start ACC play with a close loss to #9 Virginia Tech. The league is so close this year.

Duke lost in OT. When Tre Jones went down, Duke's defense didn't do very well.

0z GFS is going to be juicy no matter what. Either a bunch of pass outs or cliff jumpers. And it starts soon.

I think I'll probably either be pass out or try to keep reason. I can't think we're going to have another weenie run like the 18z...can we? If it verified as it looked, the ice would be going nowhere for days and there would be a high ratio snow topping it off. Honestly, I would not be a terribly big fan of that solution based off what happened for my parents on 2/12/14 (they lost power and it did not come back for at least 5 days! they had my grandparents place to go to but if another situation like that happened again we'd have nowhere to go now).

Man I can remember being a young winter weather junkie and I’ll never forget the first time I watched a model run come in like the 18z GFS. I think moments like those are why a lot of us do what we do because it sure isn’t the constant failure and hair pulling that brings us back to this agonizing hobby. Things like the 18z GFS is what makes it worthwhile because you just neeeeever know when the storm of the millennium might decide to show up

No way I’m staying up for the 00z gfs . The letdown after the 18z run will be large .

Happy 00z hunting everyone

If we’re not there already, we are getting very close to peak model future pattern perfection.
