Wintry 1/20 - 1/23 Winter Storm

Radar looks good....not sure if any of that is hitting the ground though.

Actually kind of looks like Jan 2014, obviously a different setup bc right now it’s less cold and less snow is expected but the orientation of the precip and how it’s frozen all the way down to the Gulf looks really similar

Snow continues for over 2 hours in NW NC despite anemic /0 radar echoes. Those roads/sidewalks where where bone dry .

So cold , this is whats going to happen IMO, a lot of shallow moisture wrung out for everything its worth. Good news is it will stick to any and everything.

Looks legit for the sandhills and triangle!

I must be too NW, as it's not snowing here.

Looking at the sounding this morning from Newport and you can see the warm layer from 925 mb to 700 mb just as forecast. It will be close to a significant ice storm here, but I think marginal surface temps 30-32 should limit some issues directly on the ground and roads. Still could be a significant issue in the treetops. Additionally, just a few miles further inland from the coast, temps should be cold enough at the surface for a significant icing event. The saving grace for areas further inland could be that the warm nose is not as thick and more of the precip will fall as sleet. We will see.

Yeap extremely difficult to get freezing rain on the coast. I only saw it one time growing up there and it was maybe an 1/8 inch. I remember the crackling sound it made as it froze.

Helpful hints for today:

Look out your window frequently

When squnting to determine if snow is falling make sure the backdrop is dark.

Ignore every model except the one that shows the most snow in your back yard.

Look out the window again

Only use the Intellicast radar mosaic.

When determining whether or not the animated pixels are headed toward your house, use a straight edge from the pixel motion to your location and adjust as necessary to force a track as close as possible

Remember to look out the window

Check mping reports upstream

Eating comfort food will help

When frustrated that it's not snowing yet, complain to a fellow weenie

Only accept posts that ignore drying trends

And be sure and look out the window
Also a good reminder:
A friendly reminder to everyone: With an impending late-season winter storm, there will likely be an elevated level of excitement and anticipation as the event draws near. Some may even experience an increase in heart rate, sweaty palms, and also blurred vision, making it difficult to accurately examine both the content and intensity of the precipitation that may soon be falling. Whether you see any snowflakes or just think that you do, please -- PLEASE -- resist the urge to call 911. This channel should be used for actual emergencies. We do not want to tie up resources with road reports, snowflake size, or storm bust laments. Thank you for your cooperation.

UK has been steady bringing snow all the way to the coast. I would be interested to see a forecast sounding from that model to see why its missing the warm nose or if its just counting all frozen precip as snow. It would be awesome if it verified, but it's really the only model that shows significant snow here at the coast.
