I just went back and looked at Trump's 2016 rally sizes for comparison, and the rally last night was actually pretty average in size. I guess the biggest problem was they hyped it up to be something it was not. They need to learn to underplay expectations.
I knew 'basement rally' was somehow a joke, but I was perplexed because I hadn't heard the term. So I googled it.

The argument, if I may, goes something like this: there wouldn’t be so much crime in these communities if not for the evils of capitalism and systemic racism.

Trump is embarrassed by the low turnout, which serves him right since he always brags about his big crowds compared to others. It is pretty funny and ironic. Maybe this will tone his ego down a bit. Would be nice but not counting on it because he's almost definitely not going to change in that regard. It is part of his schtick.
