The democrats don’t want to mail everyone checks . They want to put all the money into unemployment so that people receive weekly checks . Instead one in April and one on May . The people that get let go from their jobs would actually benefit more going that route as they would have steady income . I’m a republican, this shouldn’t be political at all . It should be what makes the most sense. without reading what their plan actually says , on the surface the democratic plan makes more sense vs mailing everyone a check

Can a self employed file unemployment? No sales means no money for me

Thankfully we have spring break next week but the week after the university plans to resume normal operations minus in class instruction. Students have been instructed to leave the dorms.

Switzerland hasn't been mentioned, but # of cases relative to its population is very high. Only Italy has a higher case per capita.

Quite frankly, all of Europe had a bad day. I am torn between optimism and realism for here. We have a great health care system here, and we pivot better than anyone. But we're about to take a punch in the nose we haven't taken since 1918.

I am hopeful that while we can't prevent spiraling number of cases, perhaps we can...keep total deaths down. Every day, this outcome becomes further rooted in hope rather than statistics.

Yep, we need to get the meds flowing.

About the checks and all that I feel like the GOP plan and the Democrats plan screw over a lot of people for either not making enough or not being able to get unemployment. If I’ve read Trumps plan correctly everyone under $75,000 single or $150,000 couples get a $1000 check per adult and a $500 check per child. It just seems like Trumps plan if fairer to everyone within the brackets. Ik not everything’s fair but I’m also biased because my dads self employed my moms a retired teacher and my sister was in PT school in 2018 so nothing the GOP or Democrats have will really help us.
Of course I would like $1,000.. but I make over the 75,000.. truth be told, it would probably go in the bank because I make what I make, I wouldn't be spurring economy on with that extra 1k. BUT.....I have thought about buying a golf cart.. so who knows

My god, even in our hospitals...

Most staff concluded that he was overreacting. “They thought the media was overhyping it,” the respiratory therapist told me. “In retrospect, he was right to be concerned.”
This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and can’t breathe at all.”

I wish I could find the article I read right after my daughter's doctor told me about it. Another reason viruses spread more rapidly in winter months is not just due to being inside around people more often. The air indoors during winter tends to be drier due to heating systems. When your sinuses are overly dry microscopic tears form in them that easily allow germs to get into your system. Drinking tons of water and saline sprays help a lot, but most people don't follow those precautions.

Despite theories that viruses survive better in cold air, I was wondering if it would be safe to assume that food put in the fridge will be safer because that refrigeration may kill any viruses that may have already been on the food? Anyone know?

That’s mostly for bacteria. Food in the fridge is safer for that reason

More of a question for the medical experts in here. I see a lot of mortality stats and public awareness on Coronavirus, but very little to none on impact that lack of emergency treatment has with common life/death situations...for example:
Heart attacks have a 14% mortality rate WITH life saving treatment, but what is the rate if treatment is not available?
Or how about a severed artery or internal hemorrhaging due to a car accident. Appendicitis?

The mortality rate for those is 100% without treatment. Obviously.

You need to word your question differently so I can try to answer it to the best of my ability. What exactly are you asking?

makes sense

Makes sense but won't work. People are NOT going to practice the kind of rigorous hygiene they need to in order to stop the virus and keep it from coming into their homes. It's far too contagious and people are far too complacent. Our only hope is medicine. That's it.

Sadly people here aren't doing what they need to in order to stop this. People are being too close, not changing their hygiene practices, and seniors are still out and about to some degree. Sending people back to school I don't think is the answer because those places are virus breeding grounds from kids who don't care about hygiene. Another hope other than medicine is unfortunately forcing people to stay home by closing a lot of things or only doing pickup orders or delivery.

No doubt. Schools are germ factories in the best of times, let alone when a novel pathogen has begun widespread community transmission.

The daily numbers seem to be improving in Washington state where this all seemed to start

The real question is, are they still testing, or are they limiting their tests, running out of kits? Maybe they were able to get it controlled? Could be any of these. What is certain is NYC is pretty much going to become the epicenter of the US at this rate.

It's hard to accurately measure some of the European nations. For instance Britain has a high CFR compared to the US for example, but according to an article I read the other day are only testing you if you become hospitalised.

Personal economic stimulus to protect economy

This makes sense :

Those that are displaced or retired: Cash Payment

Those that are working: Complete temporary payroll tax cut

We are likely to pass Spain today for cases and end up third on the list behind China and Italy.
Spain reported 3,070 new cases and 345 deaths today. We are only 2,000 cases behind them now.

The US also has 280 million additional people so we are not comparing apples to apples here

look at Russia then or India. Both are big and or highly populated. They both have very few cases. Our numbers here are horrible. Or look at NYC where you have 12,000 cases. I see this point floated quite a bit. I just don’t see why it matters that we have more people or a large land mass. The numbers are the numbers it’s horrible.

Russia VS India is very noncomparable. India has over a billion people, Russia has maybe half of what we have. Their governments also vary drastically, so India would technically be at a higher risk if it went under their radar. In the US here however, we aren't looking good for areas in NE. When your'e dealing with an outbreak in a city like NYC it could spread all over from Boston to DC if they aren't careful. That's why those areas are on lockdown.

Russia took steps to prevent long before the US did .

Building on the "radar" analogy, we really don't know what the ground truth is in India yet.

"India has tested only about 12,000 people so far, despite a capacity to test about ten times that many."
