Wintry February 19-21, 2020 Winter Storm

If anything, what happened in places ike Upstate SC and Charlotte are why TV mets are so hesitant with their accumulation predictions. The models overestimated accum in these areas.
Several inches (5 hours worth) of snow fell here. None of it was able to stick. Couple of wobbles and it could have been a big deal. Chris Justus did well with this one. I’m sure JC was proud

Just got back from another Jeb Walk. Mixed feelings. On one hand, the snow falling is beautiful as is the snow in the trees and the grass. On the other hand, the wet/slushy streets are not so much, and having to jump around and dodge huge puddles of water like you’re out there in a torrential downpour takes you out of the wintry spirit a bit. This storm reminds me a lot of the January 2013 ULL in GSO. It was also a warm storm with temperatures never falling below freezing. Our 3.5” from that one had limited impact on the roads. I don’t have a thermometer, but I’m guessing the temperature is 32-33 given there was still a lot of running water and I saw no icicles. Another couple degrees colder would’ve helped a lot.

The side roads which were under shade this afternoon are actually kind of slushy, though, so driving conditions may be a little dicey.

He called for 1-2 inches north of Greenville Pickens Walhalla. I don’t think anyone saw 1-2 inches on the ground

I'm just not a fan of people going after the mets especially after a storm like this. A lot of people were heralding the NAM for days and showing off it's clown maps. Not much they can do when nearly every model shows accumulation, then an area gets little to none.

And people say sun angle/soil temps/2m temps don’t matter....

I agree but I’ll admit I kinda miss John cecrish his experience was incredible.

Well, we have erased the goose egg with a 1, and that’s alright. Great snow for snowball fights and snowman building.. not what I was expecting.

it started as all snow here Right around 3pm, and had the ground covered within an hour, and since then just small grains of snow coming down. hate that the roads didn’t get covered, but we may still have time to reel in another before the season is over.

I certainly underestimated that aspect.
I kind of did as well. The thing is that we had the worst of all worlds. It’s late February, it’s been really warm lately, and we’re dealing with near freezing/above freezing temperatures here. Plus, most of us started out as rain. If it were in the mid 20s and everything else was the same, I think things would be a lot different.

It also just makes it a lower impact event. I will probably end up with 2-3” from this one, but it’s going to be a pretty low impact event on the roadways, less so than a lot of 2-3” or less events that can be pretty high impact (see: January 2005 in RDU).

That’s not to say the three factors above will prevent a big dog, but they’ll certainly cut into totals, and if rates aren’t heavy and aren’t consistent, they can really kill accumulations. I thought nightfall would at least allow a white blanket to cover our roadways here, but they’re still slushy, or just wet in a lot of the portions which were southern facing and thus exposed to the most radiation from the sun earlier.

Over 2 inches. Getting biggest sized flakes of the day now. Not as many as the less than dime size ones but approching quater size. Concrete pavement freezing over. Beatifull evening out walking
Glad to hear it’s still going out your way. I swear if I don’t get more snow than GSO in this storm I’m going to snap, LOL! ?

The snow has picked up a bit more here. Laying down real nicely now.

I'm over 2" and it's still coming down nicely. Not heavy but still accumulating. Looking at radar I might make 3".

Suppose to get into the 20s tonight overnight. Should stay in the 30s tomorrow and the Kids can do some sledding. One real day of winter...I'll take it.

After numerous model runs with that band running from RDU to Norfolk it seems to be forming from Fayetteville- la grange - Kinston along the Highway 70 corridor

Oh well. It is still snowing here. Would have been nice to get the heavy rates, but beggars can't be choosers. But it goes to show you we really don't know what is going to happen here with winter storms.

I can confirm that above Walhalla had an inch maybe a little more. He did fine for the mountains of Oconee.
Zilch down from there but we got to see it snow at least. You'll find out it's really hard for us on the Lee side to get anything significant without cold air in place already like on 2/8. Or a significant Cad in place. The mountains hurt and help us..this case they hurt delaying the cold push. It can still happen but the timing has to be perfect.

Welp. NWS nailed it. Kudos to them.

interesting storm. Looking forward to dissecting the results. In a sense to figure out “what went wrong”. All in all I made it out with 2 and possibly might cash out with 2.5 - right now it seems that is on the higher side for the RDU metro area. Haven’t seen many reports from NE NC yet.

very wet snow as expected.Poor ratios and not a lot of qpf

I might be hallucinating, but these seem like some of the heaviest rates I’ve seen since sundown right now here in SW Durham.
Radar is back filling some (low taking over ???). Hopefully that gives us an additional half inch or so.

Agreed! Theres such a drastic change in topography when you talk about the "Upstate". That's where you hear above 85 because in general that's the higher elevations of the upstate. You have down sloping, upsloping and other factors which affects each particular section of the upstate different. What we really need is a strong Cad in place to slow the gulf storm down and create some real over running and then let the coastal develop where it cant take the moisture away but enhance it and not fly through. Then you get several days of winter weather like back in th 80's...but those days dont seem like they'll ever happen again. Of course even then there will be areas that screwed over...like RDU and ENC..that's the nature of mother nature.
