Wintry January 29th-30th ARCC Slam Dunk Winter Weather Threat

Using the SPC meso analysis it's pretty easy to see where the colder temperatures supporting snow vs the precip is. It'll be interesting to see how long the mountains hold back the cold for areas in NC too.

Not sure how accurate that is. Pouring the snow in Asheville at unca campus and by that map the 925 is +4.

The timing/duration at ATL (~3-5 hours for ALL of the precip, not just the snow, and starting ~6-9 AM in ATL/ending late AM) and amounts for ATL (near 0.25” is what has fallen?) are about what modeling consensus suggested. But the temps were 8-10+ degrees warmer than what consensus showed!! That’s what got totally missed. Why were the temps so much warmer than modeled??
Because rain is faster than cold :)

Looking at the traffic cam up in Morganton and they have a good coating. I'm guessing Rosie did better than most on this one.
Hope so, Cheston, she deserves it :) Oddly it's still raining here, or more dripping actually, and it's near noon. Guess the tail end still has some teeth, just not some cold.

I would say because arctic fronts with snow on the backside rarely work out. If we had the front to stall and then get a wave to run along it we would have something. The event as modeled doesn't excite me and will back way away from snow 95% of the time as we near the event.

Ladies and Gentleman, I present you the January 29th-30th ARCC Slam Dunk Winter Threat. Thanks for coming, don't slip on the mud and bruise your butt on the way home.

I warned you about naming it after me....

CMC/RGEM the big winner with this storm. Both consistently blanked a lot of places.

It was a high elevation snow. The higher terrain north of 3500ft saw good snow. Below that a dusting to no accumulation.

Brief period with a snow shower at my house this morning with no accumulation. I drove up this afternoon to Helen and saw no signs of any snow there either. I did get a free day off work today though.

I'm seeing some rain/snow mix reports on Radarscope for the Winston Salem to Greensboro area. Anyone able to confirm?

Nothing in Greensboro. 37 degrees and I see blue sky to the west. We got more rain than I was expecting. There may be some black ice in a few hours.

Cold chasing moisture works out only 2% of the time here!!! Why was I sucked in?? Why??? It’s 43 here and bright sun!! Lowest it went during the day was 38?. Geez.. nothing worked out... Nd I’m skeptical we hit low 20’s tonight as advertised ?‍♀️ What a horrid bust!
