Wintry King Kong Winter Storm Potential Feb 13th-16th

940 update from HSV

A winter weather event is ongoing across the area this morning with
freezing precipitation mainly in west/central areas and rain in the
east. The situation is greatly complicated by the fact that the
polar front and the freezing line are bisecting the area from SW to
NE. Warm air aloft is providing a layer sufficiently deep for melting
of snow well aloft and thus precipitation is falling as rain
areawide and freezing on contact with those areas at/below freezing
at the surface. The location of the freezing line has progressed
farther westward than anticipated and now stretches roughly from the
HSV metro SW to Cullman. The freezing line is likely to continue to
move a bit westward as the surface low is still to our SW this
morning. Easterly winds ahead of the low will continue to advect
warmer air into eastern and central portions of the forecast area.
Temperatures may rise into the low 40s in parts of the east and into
the mid/upr 30s in central locations. The latest forecast indicates
the freezing line may advance as far west as a line from near
Fayetteville SW to Athens and Moulton by early this afternoon.
Locations to the west of that line are likely to remain below
freezing all day and thus precipitation will stay as freezing rain
(although, some ice pellets may be mixing in at times). As the sfc
low gradually tracks eastward, winds will switch from Easterly to NW
and cold air advection will take place. At that point, the freezing
line will begin to move back eastward ushering very cold air poised
just to our west back into the area. The HSV metro is likely to see
temps fall below freezing once again after 3 PM. The Winter Storm
Warning will remain in place due to current and expected impacts,
although locations in far NE Alabama may not see any impacts until
later today or this evening.

No significant changes in latest NWS HUN discussion.

I lived through the 94 and 98 ice storms in northwest Alabama and we went without power for extended amount of time in a rural area. I’m glad it not as bad for some areas as expected. Still pretty bad west of here.
