Wintry January 8-9 Wintery Weather Potential!

I'm intrigued by the front end thump on the mesoscale models. Even if we do get a front end thump we'll likely see most of the piedmont changeover to rain by late morning or early afternoon. I wonder if rates are heavy enough we could squeeze in a light dusting before the changeover.

Tonight’s NAM run is the first one I’m paying much attention to as a likely solution. It is now just under 48 hours now when the deformation band is projected to be coming through. This is when it is in its wheelhouse. This is obviously when most of us east of the mountains are most likely to see non liquified snow.

If I recall correctly the GFS showed the December 2018 event starting as rain for central NC but we went straight to snow. We picked up about 6-7" of very wet snow before we changed over to a very cold rain by late morning.
