Wintry January 8-9 Wintery Weather Potential!

Yeah, bro, I’m pretty bummed. Yeah, people are going to say we weren’t supposed to get much and all that, but we were under a Winter Weather Advisory and as late as last night the NWS map had Durham in the 1-2” range. I at least expected the ground to be white; instead, all I got was some depressing, mangled flakes mixed with rain, and wet ground.

We were under a WSW and at my house we had the ground covered, and my deck, but nothing on the road. Let's see if we can squeeze out a legit snow before Feb and March turn ugly

Storm total of 4 inches here in the NRV. Sounds like I was one of the few that actually overperformed. Absolutely beautiful snow covered morning here with bright sunshine.

Had a dusting of sorts, roofs and cars are still white now, had a decent though short burst of snow....

Maggie valley is a thing Of beauty in the snow. We saw snow flurries through the night. It’s still flurrying now that wasn’t forecasted. Covered up the cars and the trees giving a beautiful view this morning. Joey’s pancakes was delicious like always. Our room on the river with snow is like heaven can sit here for hours taking this in. I love snow unfortunately it’s back home but I love these little over night snow trips. May not snow much in liberty sc. but Maggie valley only 1hr 49 minutes up the rd. Never have to go to far to find it! Time to hope the next storm brings snow area wide outside the mountains to.

Ground was more white this morning than at any point yesterday. Mega Frost.

We had a very slight dusting last evening during the biggest burst, but it melted in minutes due to warm ground temps. If all the snow would have stuck, we would have had 1” at most. Totaled 0.20” total precip. I think maybe half fell as rain/sleet and half as snow. Not too surprised.

Congrats to everybody who saw some flakes. It finally turned over to a sleet/rain mix before ending. Eventually, there were a few random dive-bombing weighty wet flakes that mixed in. It would probably have hurt to have been hit on the head with one of them, but at least they were present for a few minutes.
Dusting here, mulch beds were white as were roofs. Despite a very wet ground, there are still patches of ice left in the yard as of now. 0.87” event total liquid equivalent, est. is ~0.2 of that was frozen.

1 inch webb for your map northern Randolph. Storn behaved here about like expected. Was hoping little more front end luck. Nice mega flakes right before sundown was a big win to get to see. On to the next one
And there was a Winter Storm Warning in Guilford County for this. Ugh.

This went down as a trace for RDU. Not surprised. RDU has still not seen measurable snow in January since 2018, after RDU reported measurable snow every January from 2013 to 2018. This is not unprecedented, however, as January 1991-1994 all had no measurable snow here!

I saw snow mixed w/ rain driving thru downtown Chapel Hill yesterday evening around 830pm
@Webberweather53 I estimate that I got about 0.1 or 0.2 in or snow. It lasted for about an hour and a half.
Lol this system has a spot in my head for having some of the biggest rates and snowflakes ever, had to be some golf ball sized falls of even bigger at times
I mean I guess the brief 50/50 snow mix counts as 0.4 lmao

Nice! I was traveling just to your north in southern Caswell county and the roads were covered in more than 0.3" of snow w/ 0.5-0.8" in Yanceyville.

Yeah the intercepts my friend & I made thru the cores of several intense snow bands over the day certainly proves this. Biggest aggregates we saw were in SE Caswell/SW Person counties and near Yanceyville that evening. Snow accumulated to nearly 0.5" on the roads near Prospect Hill in just 15 mins, actually was oddly more on the road than grassy surfaces. Drove literally all day over NC & VA but purposely driving into heavy snow over, and over, over again was extremely fun lol.
Wasn't sure where to put this, but me and my mom hiked up to the Highlands Learning Center near Purchase Knob and Maggie Valley, just inside GSMNP. Always had wanted to see the smokies in the snow, can even see evidence of inversion/riming on the peak on the right of this pic.
Had I been here, I would have echoed @Webberweather53 thoughts about 3 days before the storm as I chased this one near Mount Rogers, Virginia! I had over half a foot while Wilkes barely had 1”. I set back and laughed at all the Mets near i40 forecasting warning amounts and refusing to back down in case the deform band surprised them. This was utter bs if they would have used ground truth reporting that morning they could have dropped the warning by lunch time. I mean, the ground was so wet and melted in Wilkes by 8am I highly doubt warning criteria snows would occur down near i40 during peak heating when temps were 38 degrees. I understand they apologized that night but it really showed something in their character as a forecaster. Most noticeably Scotty Powel and a few others completely ignored upstream observations and soundings. While totals were not great it somehow managed to stay all light snow in Wilkes during the day from what I was told by family with rain closer to i77 and points south.
