Wintry January 21-23 2025

Just due to the gulf coast snows this will go down as an historic winter storm! My backyard didn’t receive anything but man I’m so happy for all those getting hit by this one! Low country looking to get hammered now!

In some ways this storm is even more impressive than the 1993 blizzard because of the locations that got so much snow.

Based on radar ILM is in for a long night, without a doubt going to be the most snow there since 89. Congrats to Disco, Shaggy, and others down that way and also those along the coast. My 2.7” PGV in the contest thread may be a little high, just haven’t been able to sustain with moderate rates, ratios are phenomenal though. About an inch on the back deck, will check the board in the morning.

To be frank for a moment, we’re getting to the point (probably passed it tbh) where black ice is going to be a problem all the way through the weekend. There’s enough accumulation here in the coastal counties that even treated roads are going to get ice packed tomorrow when people are out and about.

I just went out and took some “official” measurements and got a tad over 1” in NE Chapel Hill, NC. I’d just go for 1”, though. I honestly thought it was a little more from eyeballing it, but I think it just seems that way because of how we have 1” literally everywhere. Usually, we end up in a situation where we have 3” on the grass and 1” on the roads, for example, but here it’s consistent accumulation across all surfaces because of how cold it is.

I’m curious what RDU ends up with. I’m about 12-13 miles WNW as the crow flies, so I expect they’ll end up with a little more than me, but it shouldn’t be too different. I’m not super confident in my measuring abilities and don’t have a snowboard or anything, though.

The irony is that we probably busted “low” on some of the QPF forecasts from the NAM, etc. but ratios were great.

Taking an hour-long Jeb Walk made it special, too. I didn’t get to take one in the storm the other week until we’d already switched over to ZR which really sucked the joy out of it lol.
