Pattern Jammin January 2024

McMinnville TN beat their record daily low by 5 degrees this morning. With that said, their record January low of -19 is safe and the all time record low of -26 back in February of 1899 is even safer. IMG_6153.jpeg

Yeah I think sun is going to be tough to come by though. Probably get a lot clouds and rain during this. Doesn’t look all that much different from the around the end of December 2021 and the first few days of January 2022.
 
14.9..quite a bit colder than most models which were 7 to 10 degrees too warm for the upper Savannah River Valley. Only the rgem got it close.

So the theme here is that the first week to 10 days of February could be variable or go either way. At this point it would be fair to be skeptical of any sustained/long cold this winter in the East. This is a strong shot we are going through now, and I wouldnt be surprised to see another one in February, but it may be more like mid to late February and February is not looking to me to be wall to wall cold.

I am sure for snowlovers in my area at least (North Carolina outside the mountains) it will turn plenty cold in late February and March just in time for very cold rains. Pardon the cynicism.

Seeing the MJO hung up in 7 isn't great for Feb.
 
I bottomed out at 12 degrees, KATL dropped down to 14. NWS forecast was 15. Coldest morning since Christmas Eve 2022 when we were in the single digits. I can only imagine how cold it could have gotten if we didn’t suck so hard at getting snow around here. We could have been in record territory, I’m not crazy about bitterly cold temps, but I do enjoy seeing multi-decade record lows getting shattered. It would have been cool to see zero/sub-zero temps for that reason alone.

Low was -8.3 on one gauge and -7 on the others. It was so cold I could hear popping noise on the roof overnight. I’M assuming it was the snow making noises in the extreme cold. It’s 21 now which is the first time out the teens since Saturday afternoon.

You may get above freezing tomorrow and then its 3 straight days below freezing.
 
Really need to see some consensus on western US ridge development at the end of the month for Feb. And even with that I’m concerned the pattern maybe too progressive. You start seeing 80s show up, you it’s over over lmao
