Need to smell the blown transformers to get the snow
Still remember the sound of those transformers blowing all night during the ‘73 ice storm in Atlanta. I was seven years old and it was so eerie. Best I can find we got around 2” of freezing rain in that storm - we didn’t have power for 10 days!

It would be nice to have a cold storm with cold soil temps, road temps, etc. I’m sick of all these warm snows with marginal temps that don’t even stick to the street. I haven’t seen a cold snow since 2014!!!
So true. Some will cite jan 2018, but surface temps were in mid 30s and only dropped to 33 here during heaviest snow.

For me it was December 2002... 18 straight hours of light freezing rain with temps between 27-29

4-5 inches in Raleigh. Big storm for CLT.
The holy grail of Fab Feb

The ULL that pulled through CLT in this storm produced the heaviest snow I’ve ever seen in my life. I drove up to a friends from CAE and drove through it. It was an insane way to cap off a 3 day Winter event.

I don't remember 2014. I'm guessing there is a reason for that.
It was a much bigger storm for CLT metro up to the Triad and back towards the mountains and upstate SC. Big front end thump of snow followed by a sleetfest then another bout of heavy snow from an upper low... temps were in the 20s for most of the storm. Wasn’t nearly as big for Raleigh because of low tracked inside Cape Hatteras. It happened with a +NAO, so I would think with a -NAO in a similar storm, the low would track further east.

He just closed his facebook page down due to bickering, lol

He was the ultimate bittercaster about snow for 30 years. After all the ATL mets got so much crap about the December ‘17 surprise snow storm, he’s done a complete 180. I really think he does it with an element of spite, as in “fine, you want me to hype the snow every time and watch you get your soul crushed 90% of the time? Happy to oblige.”

Charlotte metro is way overdue. This is by far the longest we've been without a major ice storm in my lifetime.
It really has been a long time. The last one that I can remember that had widespread 1/4”+ accrual in the Metro area was December 2005. We’ve had plenty forecasted since then, but we’ve been saved by getting more sleet than anticipated.

I'm rooting for the midlands of SC to score a big dog here. You guys really deserve it more than anyone else on this board tbh
I gotta politely disagree with ya on this one. Not sure whose more deserving in our lonely state but in Feb 2010 Columbia had a 10" snow. Its been since 88 since most of us in the nw corner have had a double digit snow fall. Yes weve had our 2,3 and a 4" snow here and there but no blockbusters. Almost as bad as Fayetville but with elevation. But i always pull for my buddy Robert West down in the armpit regardless. Anywhoo the timeframe from the 7th to the 12th looks like a britchesbuster no doubt!

Thanks. About 5" here. And it probably mixed with sleet or something.

Oh yeah...we got lucky to get the 5" on the over performing front end. We were so close to having a 10"+ season but we kept missing the best stuff NSEW. You know...the usual. Here were the almosts...we found multiple ways to miss.

The wave that came through the day before the big storm was an over producer for me... I got 3.4”, the first of three consecutive days of 3”plus of daytime snowfall... almost unheard of east of the mountains. Of course I’ve not gotten more than 3 inches from a single storm since.

You didn't get 3+ in January 18?

No... I ended up with 2.6”. I had actually been in the bullseye for that storm the evening before and was forecasted 4-7”, but that area ended about 20 miles north

Lol control is a crippling ice storm in the 20s, passssssss

Ugh no thank you. We had one of those in Augusta in 2014, and it was AWFUL. 1/4" freezing rain, then 2 inches of sleet on top of it. No power for 4 days. I can still remember the eerie quiet, then the shotgun blast sound of pine trees breaking every few minutes. You never knew if the next broken tree was going to be coming through your roof.

Yep my snow from this morning is already gone. Looked like it would stick around at first but come noon the sun came out full blast and temp hit 39 which was 5 degrees above the forecasted high for the day. Lots of events this winter but every single one of them has melted within 6 or so hours due to marginal temps.

Is this pic real or photoshopped ? Looks like something out of a movie.
It’s very real. There’s a lot of photoshopped versions of it that spice it up a bit, though. ?

I believe this photo was from Glenwood Avenue (US70) somewhere between I-540 and I-440, though I’m not 100% sure on the location.
