Coronavirus (Stay on Topic)

o_O If the panic continues there's no telling what might happen economically. I get that this is a new unknown virus, but the global panic is ridiculous. This is not an end of the world, killing everybody it touches, "I Am Legend" type of virus. If people would use common sense, wash hands, stop going places if sick, leave their stocks alone, live life, etc, we will get through this like we do the flu every year. I'm not being insensitive here, I really do feel for the people who are dying and losing loved ones and it is truly tragic for them. But the whole world panicking and forcing global economic collapses, etc will accomplish nothing. The flu averages a half million deaths worldwide every year, where is the global panic for that?

See the problem here is you're taking a deep breath, slowing your decision process, and using common sense to come up with that. We know the world lost its common sense years ago.

But on a serious note, I do agree. People are reacting emotionally. Panic Selling on the stocks, Panic buying of supplies, and spitting out doomsday prophecies about global economic collapses. China is getting back to work. They are recovering and moving on, and we will too...

The bubble had to pop someday and the coronavirus is the needle. We had a trillion dollar deficit last year with a booming economy, this year could dwarf that.

A reminder - we have a new stock market thread now:

If I post about the coronavirus effect on the economy in the stock market thread I would probably be told to keep it here. They are connected

Reading some on the oil manipulation by SA. They are trying to crash the OPEC and Russia share of the market. The geopolitical pressures could mount and armed conflicts have started this way.

Quite frankly IMO societies are fragile to begin with because man walks a fine line between keeping order or descending into chaos. As long as the everything stays undisturbed then we walk the line. Throw in some kind of major societal disturbance like a natural disaster or pandemic and then geopolitical imbalances then anything is possible.

Some good myth debunking here... for example, it's not like the flu

Recap of the studies so far:

It's more contagious than the flu.

It has a higher percentage of hospitalizations than the flu.

There is a higher percentage of deaths than the flu.

There hasn't been much focus on South America, but that continent could become a hotbed of infection - limited healthcare facilities & personnel combined with terrible living conditions for millions of poverty stricken people (on a trip to Recife, Brazil I saw a favela where people were living directly adjacent to raw sewage runoff) could mean that there are many, many cases going undiagnosed.

I have in-laws in Brazil. The seasonal weather change is just beginning. It is very worrying.

Actually the only one of those three are semi true at this point is death rate being higher than the flu. The reason it’s semi true is because it is definitely more dangerous for older people than the flu. For healthy people under 50 I’m not sure it is as deadly as the flu or at least provable at this point.
