Misc Cold Season Complaining

ill be very interested to see what happens imby vs yours in the end. im less than 10 miles south of you but also further east. hopefully we both come out winners!
All I know is I will probably lose to both of you, especially @BullCityWx. But what else is new! :D I'm in NE Chapel Hill by the interstate right across the border with Durham, though, so as the crow flies, not too far from you, I imagine.

in CH, that NE pocket is likely the best spot to be for this storm. my partner lives in CH but right on the chatham line, so about as far south as orange county goes... i could see our differential being an inch or more when all is said and done. the triangle is going to have lots of narrow edges and battleground spots lol -- as you said, what else is new!

Agreed! We at least don’t have to worry about mixing as much as Wake County does, although it wouldn’t surprise me at all if we still mix.

There's a guy from Tulsa in this discord server I'm a part of who's melting down because of the lack of snow so far and calling a bust lol

Lol I still say it's too early although if you're too far south in Tulsa yeah you may still get screwed

I'm closer to 44 and doing decent

I bet it's gonna add up once it starts getting dark

Any of you Durham/CH ppl ever hangout by Angier Ave and Ellis road ? Thats where the Durham yard is on the mainline. MULTIPLE times if I got called for an East trip Train 350 down went from Linwood to High Point To Pomona In Greensboro then to the H-Line and youd not stop till Durham yard where youd have Your like 40 Durham/Carrboro cars on the head end to cut off and drop off before heading down to Selma aand swapping with a Chochowinity crew. Anyway, its always like 2AM by time you get to Durham.... man I aint never been so scared in my life thats a place you cut away and tell your engineer to Haul ass shoving into w/e track they want them in bc just dudes walking around and stuff. There and stopping to work High Point at night was always scary, stepped on needles and used other things everywhere

arent they supposed to get their heaviest snow from like 3pm onwards?

wouldnt be a winter storm though if there weren't some folks crying out "bust!!" before it has even really gotten going

everything you just described is why no, i do *not* hangout down by Angier Ave/Ellis Rd lmao. i actually live only a few miles north of there, but the difference of even half a mile can be HUGE in durham re: "i do not feel safe here whatsoever" vs "oh this is a nice quiet little neighborhood!"

No, but I have been through that area and that sounds about right. Durham has some nice areas and some really bad areas. It's so much better than it used to be, but it isn't the safest city out there. (I lived in Durham from 2019-2024 and basically almost still live there, LOL.) Durham also has a problem with a lot of very aggressive panhandlers, worse than anywhere else I've been. I think it's amplified by the fact that there aren't a lot of people out on the streets most of the time, so when you come across someone being aggressive, they often focus on you rather than going on to someone else.

They will about jump out of the car and fight you too if you get called for that Yard switcher in Durham that Builds P07 (Carrboro) / And P20 (Butner/Oxford) Train.... Theres that super busy crossing that runs right over top half of the yard there, but youre constantly blocking it and going back n forth "kicking" cars into tracks ect thats one of the yards you can actually still kick in. Well it was idk ive been gone 5yrs and would rarely ever go down east. My normal run was Lynchburg / Roanoke / Manassas VA. One of my friends that still works at NS told me a New guy Kicked a loaded tank into a track and about had an uh oh a few years back so prolly not. General Public would have an absolute fit if they knew what was in some of those cars on the mainline, its stuff that you wouldnt be around to tell the story if it ever blew up for sure

Didn't know you worked at Norfolk Southern! My uncle on my dad's side used to work for them up in WV as a conductor.

Yea I did as a Conductor from 2014 -2021. (Shouldve never left but bet on myself and failed on a college plan 😂) Had i stayed id be headed back to MCDONOUGH GA prolly next Fall 2026 for Engineer school based off seniority roster. We used to swap out with a bunch of Blufield crews in Roanoke and theyd go all To Portsmouth Ohio ect

I mean he probably will have a decent round around dark and get a couple inches I bet but there's always been a tight gradient near the metro showing up. The south side has never looked good
That's why I would have chased if I was in Tulsa. Being near a tight gradient can lead to heartbreak.

I'll be really interested to see what happens in Northern GA/Upstate SC not if but when the hi-res models come in line with reality on the qpf.

I feel very confident in widespread .15-.25 for this area... and I think when they finally show that happening you're gonna see a rapid crashing of rain/snow line for area's like Gainesville to Toccoa,GA to Anderson, SC.

Won't be shocked if we wind up with a widespread 1-2 inch snowfall for this area when it's all said and done.

I also think Spartanburg to Charlotte is a virtual lock for 1.5 to 3 inches. (assuming the qpf goes as I think it will)
Burrel, that goes against about anything I've seen from any model or any pro met or nws period! And we're less than 24 hrs out. If I get 2 inches of snow out of this even counting the possible Thursday morning band I will personally drive down to Clemson SC, shake your hand and buy you any steak dinner of your choosing! And I mean everything I just said and anyone who doesn't have me on ignore by now (probably half the board) can hold me to it!

Yeah but honestly I was already good with the winter. The only reason I sort of got into this was the ridiculous hype but I'm fine with whatever happens. The fact we've already got this tells me we'll get at least 4 inches worst case scenario

Burrel is NEVER gonna quit until the Suns back out on any threat I can always admire that lmao

I can’t decide if Greensboro is going to get more snow than Raleigh. Will there be enough precip for GSO, and how much sleet will RDU get? Tough call. 95% of the time Greensboro wins.
Yeah, it's a tough call. Less temp issues there but also a lot more QPF issues, most likely. Last time I looked at the NBM, it had them both at about the same. NWS RAH WFO actually has GSO with higher projected snowfall at this point now, I believe. I'd probably go a little higher at RDU given they'll likely have substantially more QPF to play with that they may outperform even if they face significant mixing issues. Will probably put in my entries for the forecast contest tonight after some 00z runs (or forget to do it at all like last time).

I think you're taking my words out of context a little bit. I never said I'm predicting/expecting 2 inches of snow.

I said, "I won't be shocked if a widespread 1-2 falls". That doesn't mean I'm counting on it happening.

I will be shocked if we get 1 inch. Same snow hole depicted on every model. Some worse than others. Guess we get jumped due to transfer and being in the mountains. Not quite east side of the mountains but close. But 10 miles to the west 3 to 4 inches and 20 miles to east same.

greensboro definitely wins most of the time, that is for sure.

my best guess is GSO will get around the same amount of snow as the southern half of Wake due to mixing in the latter region. But that the northern and especially NE parts of RDU/Triangle will get a good bit more than GSO -- maybe 3.5 inches to their 2-2.5?

if we are talking airport to airport as the immediate location, I give RDU the edge over GSO but could see it going the other way too.
