Dang man, you must live in a valley or close enough to an urban heat island or something. Not that far from you and I've got some glaze over here.

I think I just creeped to 33 though, so what I've got now is all she wrote.

I’m wondering given I live in SW Durham (10-15 minutes SW of downtown) if that plays a role. I guess I’m downwind of the UHI effect with winds out of the NE and in a situation super marginal already, maybe the tenths of a degree that costs me makes all the difference. It’s also true I’m in a relatively low elevation area (250ish ft IIRC, I think the RDU airport is 394 ft and it rises pretty fast towards 600 ft as you get closer to Burlington) and maybe that makes a difference. I don’t know.

It’s ice, so it’s kind of meh, but it’s definitely discouraging. I just got paperwork from my apartment complex asking me to renew for another year, maybe I need to move! ?

Yea, it's funny how in these marginal events, slight differences get magnified. Believe it or not, I'm near 500 ft in elevation slightly NE of RDU, but then it drops down as you get closer to Falls Lake. This area is hillier than you think.

I'll give an example. March 2014 storm. No ice Raleigh except...I noticed on one little stretch on 540 driving to work--some faint ice at the very very top of the trees between 2 exits. (Leesville Rd and Hwy 70) I checked the elevation map. Turns out that's the highest part of 540. ?‍♂️ Topography I reckon.

The coldest temperature reading I've ever seen with freezing rain came from Oregon. 9 degrees. Can't remember the name but it was a valley in the far NE part of the state.
 
Don’t fall for the models. We are not getting a snow storm in the Carolinas next week. Maybe the mountains but not the majority of the Carolinas. The past few weeks have made me jaded!

As bad as my area is for snow we managed a late season miracle Mid-March 2018. Got 1 inch of snow overnight with brief but heavy snowfall. Didn't stick around long but was the only March snow I remember getting in my lifetime. May have been others but I don't remember them. I was born in '84 so I didn't get the see the 1980 awesomeness.

Definitely not expecting anything like that again though.

I saw this on Allan Huffman's Twitter, I would just like to point out the very symmetric curve of 32... until it hits the Great Wall of Wake and neatly detours around the county. Not complaining today because I want to have power, but this seems to be about right for most winter storms these days.

I’m on the north side of the curve and didn’t notice any icing, RIP.
 
At least a decent ice storm would’ve made me continue to have faith that a winter storm can happen here. Instead, I am left wondering and every winter storm continues to overpromise and underdeliver. And no, it’s not my weenieisms or snowfall clown maps unrealistically increasing expectations, I’m judging against the official NWS forecasts and TV Mets. Every storm since I moved back from FL has underperformed. We suck.

I thought I had the mojo. The Triad was killing it when I lived there until 2016, above average from 2009-2016, then I move to FL and not only do they get the first accumulating snowfall IMBY in 23 years, but there’s also two hurricanes that made landfall in the FL panhandle in three years! And though Irma made landfall in S FL, it was also still a tropical storm when it crossed my area. Then I move here and my mojo is gone!! We suck at everything except getting to 100 degrees in October! And constant rain!!

I’m 20” from DBQs snowiest winter on record, I bring the mojo!
This past cold snap broke a lot of records also! Apparently, it’s not normal to have snow on the ground from Jan 1st through now and current depth is 16-18”!
