Pattern Fab Feb

Yeah. We got down to 8 here just from getting about 2 hours of clear skies and the breeze was still up. A very solid snow pack with no bare ground here. If the wind stays calm, I think it could really bottom out tonight. Full moon tonight too, so I encourage anyone to go out and see just how bright it is outside tonight and here that distinct crunch of the packed powder
My area always seems to really perform in cold events, this morning got down to -0.2. Probably gonna go lower tonight, western York county sc

Mjo possibly getting into the IO is going to at least favor periods of western trough but it doesn't favor a SER. Maybe post mid month once/if the mjo can progress forward we can get into mid of a SER pattern. Until then I wouldn't be surprised if we had at least another shot or 2 through the 15th.

This pattern has been absolutely brutal for Alabama in terms of winter weather. Central Alabama has seen some flurries and cold temps for the last 4-5 weeks. Ready for a pattern mixup.
You guys had great winters while we watched from a far in recent winters . It’s good to take turns.

If we get a block to develop here and keep it undercut through the Atlantic… we will widespread winter storm again in mid-February, imo. Even with the not ideal pacific.(also won’t shock me to see the west coast improve as we get closer since that’s been the theme all winter).

Models seem pretty keyed in on developing that block there too.

Maybe...but that has been our typical Feb pattern the past 7-8 winters.

I get trolled, called a clown, attacked from people I don't know for objectively discussing what is model consensus. And I know you weren't doing that. But...it's better on here to just assume the models are wrong when it shows a less than favorable pattern. And, yeah, you are probably right, that pattern being modeled in the extended is probably wrong.

You need 2 inches of sleet. Cause we still got it from 8 days ago underneath all that snow. Ive never seen ice harden , and refuse to melt, let go like that stuff. Been so cold , so long , so that plays a big role. This snow will just evaporate in sun, regardless how cold it is.
I will say this, I love having a white landscape in the winter. So much more attractive than brown ground
I bet there's at least two inches of ice and sleet still on the ground in Nashville and in some places it hasn't even looked like it melted at all covering large areas

Probably snowier in NC than there.

In all seriousness I saw a post (maybe shared in here) that Charlotte in one storm has almost as much snow this winter as Denver, CO.
I saw that too. Denver is only at 13.4” season to date. Of course they typically get there biggest snowfalls in March and April

Those who’ve said they’re sick of the cold pattern and thus want it to end ASAP and stay away (definitely not me) must love the much warmer E US vs how it looked late last week on the models for mid-Feb. Due to much warmer models for the E US weeks 2-3 vs how they looked Friday, natural gas opened as sharply down as I can ever recall it doing (-15%!). I hope BAM isn’t too upset lol:

When you realize how much warmer the EPS is vs Fri, you’d realize one of the reasons:

Fri 12Z EPS HDD (lower left purple): week 2 gradually warmed only to normal HDD

Today’s 12Z EPS HDD (lower left purple): week 2 now plunges to significantly below normal HDD/warmer than normal

The HDD for Feb 8-13 dropped sharply from 148 to 124.

In addition, today’s Euro Weeklies for week 3 (2/16-22) are significantly warmer in the E US vs Fri’s run:

So, these models fwiw are suggesting that the cold pattern is going bye bye for an unknown length of time. Those wanting a break would be thrilled. No matter what happens, I’ll never soon forget the cold of mid Jan through early Feb, a fantastic exciting 3.5 week long period! We may be back to much more mundane wx soon.

Some wait all year for winter. There is no need to wish it gone. It is a precious few months. That is all we get. Then you have to fear severe season followed by months of endless heat and humidity. I want all the winter season we can get.
