Tropical Hurricane Ida

That guy is wanting this thing to be east so bad

I was all aboard the eastern shift until I thought the trend would stop. The steering currents that people are looking at are the 250Mb-850Mb, and the steering speed on that maps is around 2-4 knots, while the more westerly 700-850Mb is 10-12 knots. From 250-700Mb, the map indicates that there's no strong steering, and the speed is 0.

oh man maybe 6 hours or so and this thing might go buzzsaw mode View attachment 89579
Each phase of a storm has “that look” we went through the “that look” phase with the shrimp making it into cane status … now it has “that look” when a hurricane goes major! … I hope we don’t get to “that look” with the buzz saw being the next animal up

I dont blame those for wishcasting it east. But it looks now like we have to face the fact that NOLA is going to be on the east side and getting a beating. Really feel for that city and the horror theyve had to endure.

You are probably right, but I wondering if New Orleans will get the eye?

About dozen people kept saying the HHs wouldn't make it into the storm until 2:30AM. How did many people not realize that there was a 'Z' after the numbers?

I just saw a tweet it was emergency recon shrugs lol

Actually no now that I read the above the 2330z flight was supposed to do a fix at 230z that's what that means. When the flight aborted obviously no fix

Do y'all remember when Northern Gulf hurricanes used to be falling apart at landfall? Heck even Katrina was. There was a long list of others too

But lately Harvey Michael Laura and barring something crazy Ida is joining the list

Yeah something has changed over the past few years. You absolutely could count on a hurricane weakening at landfall every time.

"Flight-level and
SFMR observations also indicate that Ida's wind field has expanded
and there is some indication of a double-wind maximum."

First indications of a future eyewall replacement cycle?

Maybe, but the doom-caster in me says the timing is such that it runs out of time to complete the cycle, and instead it comes ashore with concentric eyewalls which would increase impacts to the greater N.O. area since it remains likely the center passes far enough to the west to spare at least the city proper a direct hit from the NE eyewall.

I was hoping we would see a little more east shift to save NOLA from the worst hit/angle/approach possible. I just don't see that now. I think this either hits directly over NOLA or they take the eastern eyewall and obviously that isn't good.

Yeah really starting to look like they are going to take a direct hit with the east eyewall, what a nightmare for them

My cousin posted this today in Facebook. Bet she hasn't considered lugging groceries up 17 flights of stairs if the elevators arent working due to no power. She is going to regret the decision to not hop on a flight out.

It’s taken a while to understand and for many they don’t wanna believe it but global warming has caused ocean temps to run much warmer than normal and the waters in the gulf are no different.. the waters everywhere now can support and sustain major hurricane all the way to the coast lines … it used to be only certain areas would have those type of temps but now that expands and warms so the warm spots are warmer giving bigger booms to storms now and the cooler spots now are warm and can sustain those strong storms … IMO of course this is what I think is happening
