Misc Winter Weather Support Group

You are right. Because at least they won a couple games. Most of us got a goose egg last year and working on another shutout this year.

I love to joke and complain as much as anyone, but as I've said in another post, this winter has felt like winter.

  • I have not recorded a temperature above 66F since November
  • Average high of 55.9 and low of 37.6 in December
  • Enough rain to declare the drought just about over
  • 21 nights below freezing so far this fall and winter season
  • Average high of 47.5F and an average low of 30.7 through one quarter of January

Now the only thing missing is a significant winter storm, but based on the past five years, this is pretty damn good so far.

Edit: I keep having to edit this post. Temps are plummeting tonight for some reason, already at 32F here, thus making this day another to hit the freezing mark.

Yeah I mean I've seen 70s and been wearing shorts on Christmas before. I've seen killer tornado outbreaks this time of year it could be way worse

I think what frustrates me is some folks put zero effort into this whole thing. They don’t try to learn and when they see one lemming jump off, well here comes ten more.
Not only don't they learn, some never grow up

This.

While I'm disappointed (like most everyone else) there hasn't been any frozen stuff so far, it has been VERY nice actually having some sustained cool to cold weather for a change. It's not like we're talking mega cold here, many haven't even seen sub 20 yet (including me). The past few winter's have been chocked full of 60 s and even 70s and struggling to get more than few nights at a time below freezing. Many of us have been in the 20s more than not over past couple of weeks and no ridiculous 70s for highs. It's nice to be close to average or even a couple degrees below for a change. Without it we wouldn't have even had a chance with those two systems last week.

I've said it before, but all these "if it's not going to snow I'd rather it be 70" posts are just hard to understand. We live in a warm and often hot part of the country and we only have a short window of actual chilly weather, and an even shorter window for snow. If you get get 60s and 70s all "winter" you will never see snow again. Ever. It has to be cold to have chances for snow. Obviously cold is no guarantee, but the more time we get with cold the more chances we'll have. It's kinda like saying you are deperate for rain but then complain when it's cloudy. If it's never cloudy you're never going to see rain.

Hopefully we'll all get some snow we can enjoy this year. If we don't, I'll be very disappointed like the rest of you, but I'll still be enjoying the "colder" weather. We'll have warmth, humidity, weeds, pollen, and bugs back soon enough.

Yup people have short memories here... It wasn't that long ago it was a heat index of 115+ everyday and zero rain for weeks and it'll be back way too soon...

And yeah don't even get me started on the bugs.... Good riddance

At least we're not NYC... 694 days without an inch of snow and they have way better climo than most people on this board

I was going to say I didn't know you could get lemons this time of year in North Carolina?
Citrus fruit mature this time of year but the question is how did the plant survive the cold waves and how did the fruits mature with multiple freezes … no citrus grows in this state except for like weird hybrids or maybe one super hardy plant on the coast

Y'all were trippin' yesterday! Some of us weenies were ready to cliff dive and @Webberweather53 and @Myfrotho704_ were talking you off the ledge instead of dashing hopes and dreams ?. Colder air and a pattern that can produce is coming. Stay strong!

@Jimmy Hypocracy was also paging me to clean up a thread instead of cluttering it up himself! Have you turned over a new leaf?

He hasn't, go read most of his comments Lol j/k (kinda)

I was on AmWx all the time in college (2016-2020) and it never was quite to this level, except in an incredibly tongue-in-cheek sense. It also felt like there was even more education on how these dynamics worked. (Incredibly thankful for the education and informational posts that grit, Webb, fro, and others put on here though—not saying there isn’t high-quality educational stuff on here!)

I don’t really remember when the switch came and I moved over here. Or why. Seems like others did too. Or maybe they were posting on both?

Anyway, not trying to say anything negative about this site at all. You guys do a great job running the place and most posters seem truly like fun and good people. I just wonder what (if anything) changed. Am I just looking at the past with rose-tinted glasses?

For better or worse, times have changed. Yes, there was some questionable moderation on the SE forum on American that many (including me) were not happy with. I came over here, where there's quite an adjustment with folks spread out more. What gives Alabama snow may not be what I'm rooting for in central NC.

As far as the moderation and atmosphere. I'm like you in that I'm here more for the education and sharing information about this hobby that I enjoy. As you alluded to, many are here for the social aspects and lighthearted fun. The same one-liners with no substance from some members that don't ever offer anything of importance definitely grates on my nerves as well as others (paging @SD). I'm usually one of the most heavy-handed when it comes to moderating and giving out warnings/bans. However, with so few people posting, I haven't worried too much about it this season so far. There's banter in every thread right now. If we get a big storm and more traffic in here, I'm sure we will moderate things more closely.

I feel like around the time this website was created, many meteorologists started really building up their followings on twitter, facebook, etc... where they have more control and have the ability to monetize their content. Just like in many other special interests and hobbies, message board websites are dying off because of social media.

He got married. A new wife will do that. RIP Jimmy

Regarding social media, there's only so much of the aspect they can use from a dedicated site for a subject before it needs a dedicated site. With the practical implosion of Twitter by Elon and the shady practices known by the giant social media companies, the stability of those platforms and their futures are uncertain. I think that's why a lot of board sites still exist today since people see some certainty they'll remain or information easily retained unlike how Twitter forced an account to view newer information, is trying to make the entire thing pay-to-use, etc.
