Putin doesn't want NATO on his border, so what does he do?

Invade a country that has a NATO country on its border and cause NATO to do some military exercises themselves.

Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant.

I don't like it myself, but this does seem as if it is all but NATO vs Russia already.

You may be able to get Ukraine to agree to neutrality, but there is no way that you'll get NATO to retreat from the areas in Eastern Europe that they're in considering what happened, and that is apparently something that Putin wanted.

"A nuclear war cannot be won, and must never be fought," the White House official said. "We think provocative rhetoric regarding nuclear weapons is dangerous, adds to the risk of miscalculation, should be avoided, and we will not indulge in it."

The official said the U.S. is assessing President Putin's directive and at this time sees "no reason to change our own alert levels." Neither the U.S. nor NATO have any desire or intention for conflict with Russia, the official added.

From here:

This is smart, don't play Putin's game, continue to strengthen Ukraine with weapons and let "volunteers" go in to help. The harder Putin goes after cities the more aid and equipment we send them he has to know this is something he can not win.

Debate at the UN will be critical today, understanding is many international voices will be heard.

From BBC News 2 Hours ago:
Dozens of people have been killed in Russian missile strikes on Ukraine's second city, Kharkiv, officials say.

"Kharkiv has just been massively fired upon by grads [rockets]. Dozens of dead and hundreds of wounded," interior ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko said in a post on Facebook.

BIG increase in snow this week (mainly tomorrow through Fri) for much of Ukraine per 12Z GFS with 6”+ just for Tue-Fri, alone, at Kyiv, which would be more than double normal snowfall for entire month of March. Normal snowfall Kyiv: 2.4” in March and 4.2” in Feb means they could get the normal Feb plus March snowfall over just the next 4 days. Even if 12Z GFS overdone, model consensus is certainly implying a significant increase in snowfall there and in most of Ukraine this week vs recent weeks as even the 12Z GEFS has 4-5”, more than on earlier runs:

Even today we and Europe are funding Russia to wage their war against Ukraine. Let that sink in. Along with sending releif, why dont we 180 and correct that.
There’s a reason why leaders and the rich don’t fight. Some things are done and said just to please peasants. They can’t and won’t ever bend over to $.

Interesting, I’d had figured Kyiv averaged much more snowfall than that. Looks like it’s very dry there in winter, so I guess it makes sense, though.

Yes, indeed, Kyiv only gets 3.2” of liquid equivalent on average in Nov-Mar. They get 18.6” of snow on average then. So, if they get 0.65” liquid/6” snow just over the next 4 days, that would be quite significant relative to normals.

I know the nuke conversation gets old. But I’ll say if Putin used a nuke it would probably be a very low grade nuke. And that’s still very unlikely to happen. I have to believe it’s all talk and scare tactics.

The nuke talk is playing into Putin’s game. Don’t fall for the sensationalism. I like what the White House said earlier today:

"A nuclear war cannot be won, and must never be fought," the White House official said. "We think provocative rhetoric regarding nuclear weapons is dangerous, adds to the risk of miscalculation, should be avoided, and we will not indulge in it."

Very well done.

I keep hearing that Putin doesn't want NATO on his border. But I can't really figure out why. It's not like a NATO country is just going to randomly invade. And if he's worried about a missile attack, can't missiles just be launched from virtually anywhere? Conquering one nation after another, as has been suggested to be his plan, will eventually put NATO on his border.

Putin is just a giant ----

He wants full access to the Black Sea with nobody standing in his way

More nuke talk lol

Ukraine is rich in resources. It would be an exceedingly stupid strategy to destroy the land and make it uninhabitable. It would equally be exceedingly stupid to level cities and infrastructure. The west likes to blow up infrastructure and spend years and billions rebuilding it. I'm not sure why Russia would want to do that and also kill a bunch of civilians in the process, when their ultimate goal is to have a country that is loyal to Russia and can provide food and resources and a strategic position for them. There's way too much propaganda floating around.

I think Russia is going to end up with a lot of Ukraine for good , least the eastern half . I’m hoping we can get back the western coast areas at least . The eastern areas seem somewhat loyal to him ? Whatever he can have them . Not sure that anyone will concede anything though, it’s all or nothing .
