Severe Severe Threat Jan 11-13 2023

That's just up the road from here. It tracked by a mile away and destroyed hobby lobby a mile and a half over from me, and would have gone thru the Experiment Station as it's between the shopping center and Experiment, where there was damage anecdotally. But then the Walmart Center is just before the HObby Lobby center across the freeway, and I haven't heard it was hit, so I guess it was skipping. Sure are lots of sirens.

What a ------- line
Yep..just had pea size hail and 40 plus mph gusts. Hail is sort of rare here east of athens..as a lot of times the topography/elevation drop from Atlanta weakens lines of storms and storms in general. Biggest ive ever seen was just quarter size. But the hail just now, although small, was coming down at a pretty decent rate..but only lasted about 2 minutes.

Just thinking about today, having looked at zero surface maps; the long lived supercell really reminded me of the ones we typically see form at the triple point of frontal systems. I wonder if we had a meso low form over central AL which helped back the surface winds and also create a pseudo warm front which it follows explaining the definite more western movement compared to other storms of the day.

There was definitely a gradient around I20 and southward.

Drove into a tornado unintentionally today in Mariwether county GA while chasing. Was trying to punch through the precip and get south of the storm but drivers in front of me were driving super slow for miles and I ended up getting in the tornado. Certainly an experience of a lifetime, but scary as hell.

I was wondering why I heard so little on this! This is the storm that grabbed the power from the one heading towards my school and formed a few miles dead south of LaGrange… I saw that couplet as it headed east into Meriwether county… but I’ve heard nothing about damage there.

I think there were two twisters in Griffin. My brother's house was hit (minor damage) but many trees taken out. I think this one damaged the high school, too. The second one must of been north of there, maybe riding along GA HWY 16. Someone mentioned that it looked like twins on radar. Griffin High School is 2 miles from Hobby Lobby. Could it have been one tornado?

You gotta give us more than this. C'mon man. ??

My sisters house got hit in Lagrange. It took half of her house, blew out all windows and took the garage door and totaled a car. She was at work in Columbus and is headed home now.
We hate to hear that, man. Everyone’s worst nightmare. Especially those like us who are obsessed with everything weather. Praying for the best for her.

I'm glad to hear you are ok, Mr. Brady. I appreciate all of your many contributions to the forum.

It's very rural there, mostly trees and fields. Lots of trees down on Roosevelt hwy though, which is the road I was on.

Slow mo video of the edge of the Nader. My truck was shaking intensely.

Andrew, you're not the only one that got caught by a tornado today. Earlier, storm chaser Brad Arnold had a cyclic supercell literally drop a new tornado right in front of him in AL earlier today..

Glad, youre alright.

What an insane severe outbreak today

Gonna be close to verifying a High risk across central AL and GA.

Edit: That damage in Kingston is intense. Seeing a little tree debarking.

Excellent breakdown of what happened yesterday.

I had to intuit some of it, but I feel throughly educated. Many thanks for that. I'm thankful all I lost was the upper 60 feet of a pine. Lot of damage in a wide swath from a mile to nearly 2 miles south of me, so even out of the core it was doing discrete damage.

I have posted this guys content before. Very educational. He also has a lot of content on historical significant events. If anyone is wanting to learn about the subtle things to look for in the lead up to an event this is an excellent place to start!

The 500mb look was classic for a big severe weather day in the south. I’m a little annoyed myself that I didn’t look at anything prior to the system.

I'm hearing it was two tornadoes. Described as two bombs going off in Griffin. It would make sense based on damage reports I'm hearing. I'm at the north end of the damage and so far have two pines down, or snapped off. I'm going out rubber necking later to try and get a sense of it. Drone footage is very informative. And that LaGrange security footage is really frightening.
