In the U.S., African Americans are 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police than white people. For black women, the rate is 1.4 times more likely.

That’s according to a new study conducted by Frank Edwards, of Rutgers University’s School of Criminal Justice, Hedwig Lee, of Washington University in St. Louis’s Department of Sociology, and Michael Esposito, of the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. The researchers used verified data on police killings from 2013 to 2018 compiled by the website Fatal Encounters, created by Nevada-based journalist D. Brian Burghart. Under their models, they found that roughly 1-in-1,000 black boys and men will be killed by police in their lifetime. For white boys and men, the rate is 39 out of 100,000.

Yeah, this is a good point to make when folks mention the fact that white folks are killed more in absolute numbers. They’re ignoring that white folks far outnumber black folks.

But another thing that should be analyzed to make it more complete is the number of black vs white killed PER ENCOUNTER with police. Black folks have many more encounters per capita with police vs white folks, largely as a result of their average economic situation being poorer. I don’t have the actual stats to compare for killings per encounter. Does anyone here have that data?

What I’d really like to see is the % of poor black folks killed vs % of poor white folks killed of those who encounter the cops.

Id also bet the police encounter percentage is heavily skewed toward a few certain cities where violence is prevalent. The small town where I live is higher percentage black(70/30) and you never hear of violence.

No trap, don't be so paranoid. Would expect anyone replying to know that. My question is how/why can they make that work? Are they better than us in these areas?

One interesting data point is that police initiated contacts are equal for whites and blacks at 11% even though whites greatly out number blacks......this suggest racial profiling is a thing....

I'm not sure how that works but will look into it. I was really asking the question. BTW not a proponent and avid collector here but open to better ways of doing things if they work.

You can’t just say contacts are at x% without also seeing at what % does a race commit crimes.

Poll out just today that just 27% of Americans favor defunding police.

I mentioned this earlier. I think taking the tasks they are not specifically trained for away and giving them to people more qualified is a better way of verbalizing this. No different than asking young inexperienced battle trained troop[s to ride herd on unruly protesters.

Why Donald Trump cant stop cities from defunding their police....how is Donald Trump being elected going to stop any of the cities that want to defund police from doing just that....

People associate The Madness of defunding police with the Democrat Party. You don't hear any Republicans yelling defund police.

You’re correct that Trump can’t directly stop cities from defunding them but there may be some kind of indirect means of influence and also he has an image of being pro-cop. If enough folks are fed up with the defund police movement, that may sway some swing voters to vote Trump just because they figure he’ll encourage more support for cops than Biden would do.

Interesting. I bet majority are soft white people living in cities. Black people know their communities need the police.
 
One of the voting blocks that could decide the election is suburban women. Well in that poll on defunding police, only 20% of women age 40+ are in favor so that will be a non starter for them should Biden come out and push the issue of defunding.
 
Given the racial tensions, I’m so glad the Democratic Party sent us another old white man. Could you imagine if they had sent us a younger African American to face Trump? As a trump supporter, even I would be highly worried about losing in that scenario given the state the country is. I think it’s too little too late to pair Biden with anyone who could help him beat Trump. VP matters much less even for me when it comes to voting enthusiasm.
