I'm some ways, yes. New Orleans was below are level, and flooded more than flat land. It did get hit hard, but Katrina was weakening at landfall. Harvey strengthened at landfall, and stalled. Whatever was blown apart by the wind probably is being washed away due to the feet of water on the land. Not sure how much water Katrina had flooded New Orleans with, but if anything, Harvey has passed it due to area.

Yes i totally agree with that. Houston is also the 4th largest city in the US only behind NYC, LA, and Chicago, and is one of the global capitals of the oil industry, which alone will lose billions to perhaps tens of billions of dollars...
 
I don't think most people evacuated from Houston, either. Listening to the scanner and there are lots of calls of people trapped, bridges collapsing, and the police can't get to calls.

Harvey will definitely rank among the top 10 most costliest hurricanes I believe. I saw a few news outlets saying early estimates could be 40 billion, just above Ike, or the third most costly storm.
 
Remember that even after Harvey passes/dissipates there will be still river flooding to deal with across the area through Labor Day Weekend and perhaps longer in some areas. This means that some communities in south-central and southeastern TX are going to be isolated from the outside world for weeks.
 
Other issues... Houston Watersupply is now threated "long term" due to damage to intakes/treatment plants, and power issues.. And looking at GR out of Corpus.. Center is drifting SE towards GOM.. So angle of bands are changing a bit back into Houston Metro...
 
Pictures of families on roof tops in Houston with water to the top of their homes. After cutting through the attict awaiting on helicopter rescue. Awful reminder of NOLA in Katrina. Seems like alot of people were caught off gaurd by the rapid rise of water but the NWS NHC has been forecasting this for weeks. The storm #Harvey name will likely be retired when this disaster is over...Catastrophic was the right words to use. Crazy how last night (saturday PM) rainfall rates of up to 6" per hour. Im sure rates are heavy today to in the feeder bands shifting northwest
 
HRRR says the flooding in Houston is only going to get worse and the affected area will expand even farther east today with portions of SW La getting extreme rainfall

Harvey currently moving SSE. Once in gulf lets see how far east it can go with rain.
 
Have a friend in Houston who is a nurse and she said Ben Taub Hospital is evacuating. She is held up at another hospital.
 
12z Euro takes harvey SSE off the coast then turns it back north. 993 at 12z Wednesday making a second landfall around Houston
