Pattern January Joke

This is mind-boggling. Big deep trough swinging through with alot of cold air aloft...but nothing to get temps colder at the surface and very little in the way of moisture. We just can't have nice things.

The general rule of thumb is that at this lead, troughs are usually modeled too deep, and too far south. aka NW trend. However, often this winter, we've seen time and time again similar troughs verify further south and west at go time. And yes, this is hopium from a Georgia weenie.
 
Why was this GFS run better for the Carolinas? More west or low better on the coast?
The low off the coast develops and deepens as it moves NE. That favors places closer to the coast. Man look at the heavy snow on the outer banks as it moves away. Fun to be at Jockeys Ridge if something like this worked out.
