@olhausen is a BOSS! Making the wifey shovel the driveway!!!?7 inches on the dot with this storm. Temp is currently at 13.8 and hasn’t been above 17 since Saturday night. It’s not all fun and games though. The wife comes out with a shovel after I cleared the whole driveway and makes me look bad ?

I saw what I believe was five total snowflakes with the back end of that moisture moving out
Having spent most of my life near Columbia SC, this isn't unusual. They are usually the last to cool down.Amazing how warm it is still in SC.
I can’t tell you how many times I wondered when is it gonna cool off in my three years thereHaving spent most of my life near Columbia SC, this isn't unusual. They are usually the last to cool down.
I think the NWS should of listened to you last night lol. Didn't see any ice around here and usually a setup like that doesn't favor us.Not gonna get cold enough, fast enough. Not to mention these ground Temps when it's out here feeling like Spring Break today.
They will top 20 up top beech if it continues through the night. This cold squeezes moisture out your nose up there and turns it into dendrytes. They truly are maxing out the backside upslope. Sure wva doing the sameStill snowing pretty good in Boone. Heading up there early tomorrow.

Yeah I believe the top of Beach was pushing 15” this time yesterday. Big storm MLK weekend last year as well. We got 13” up there that day. They just know how to win up there. They will top 20 up top beech if it continues through the night. This cold squeezes moisture out your nose up there and turns it into dendrytes. Yes… all the ski resorts should be in great shape to handle the 7-10 day mild spell. Should be some good spring skiing conditions on days it’s not rainingThey will top 20 up top beech if it continues through the night. Yeah I noticed the same thing. Was very surprised being as the temperature was in the mid-20s max all day.One thing I thought was very interesting. At least in the Birmingham area yesterday, was the power of radiational heating. We were well below freezing all day but a full day of sunshine coupled with some wind worked wonders on the road. Just goes to show that whatever falls won't necessarily always "stay frozen on the roads for days"
I noticed when I was growing up the same thing. I also noticed that the snow and ice melted faster when it was 25 degrees and sunny , than when it was 35 degrees and overcast. Not wanting to start any trouble, but that's why I believe much of the polar ice cap melt is because of less pollutants (volcanic ash etc) to block out the sun's rays rather than temperature increase.Yeah I noticed the same thing. My birdbaths were frozen solid in my front yard. I put a pan of warm water on my back deck and one in the front next to the birdbath. Both were frozen an hour later. The sun hit the front and 2 hours later the ice was all gone in 21 degrees and in the back still frozen. I had steam coming out from under my deck this morning . All I could figure out was that it was from the sun hitting that spot as there were no pipes or anything but dirt where it was coming from . The sun is powerful !One thing I thought was very interesting. At least in the Birmingham area yesterday, was the power of radiational heating. That’s the thing about these Arctic airmasses that’s so interesting… how shallow they can be. One time I was on a business trip in late January to Denver… the temperature in town was around 0 while the ski resorts west of town and higher elevation were in the 20sPretty crazy stuff with this system. Last night Mt. Mitchell had a low if -4 which means that many places in TN, N Mississippi and maybe even N AL were colder than Mt Mitchell and Beech Mtn. Pensacola FL has now had as much wintry precipitation this winter as Asheville.

I remember as a kid this broke my heart. We had a couple inches of snow one night and the next day it was a high in the teens with sunny skies. I thought there would be no melting. Little did I know in sunny spots that dry snow got scorched so quickly and the roads were clear by noon... ?I’ve seen snow melt when it was 15 degrees with sunny skies.
This is why I’ve never understood why people always want higher ratios. It always seems to me that dryer snow melts and evaporates more quickly. That paste bomb we had in March 2009 hung around several days despite that high sun angleI remember as a kid this broke my heart. January 11’ was 7-8” of fine powder here then on the back edge we topped it off with ZR. That stuff was unmeltable. I can still feel that crunch under my feet. Prob never see one like that again. This is why I’ve never understood why people always want higher ratios. It always seems to me that dryer snow melts and evaporates more quickly. Yeah I’m meaning more of a deal where you don’t get any mixing like that on top. I’ve seen a number of times over the years where there is a 16-17:1 ratio snow that just disappears as soon as the sun hits itJanuary 11’ was 7-8” of fine powder here then on the back edge we topped it off with ZR. That stuff was unmeltable. I can still feel that crunch under my feet. Prob never see one like that again.
I guess it’s just a personal preference… I’ve always rather keep the snow on the ground for a bit. That’s why I didn’t go into a meltdown in February 2014 when things switched over to sleet… kept the covered here for days despite warming up fairly quickly after the stormStaying power is great and I want it, but it's a distant second in importance to total max accumulation.
Give me 8 inches that all melts within a day or two over 4 inches that hangs around for a week.
Yeah… seeing that 40:1 ratio in January 2003 was something to remember. The snow was even really fluffy it was so dryPart of it is just the rarity of high-ratio pixie dust snow here. I've had plenty of cement paste and raging multi-inch sleet storms the last 20 years, very few powder snows though.
