January 11th-12th Southern Slider

What exactly is the criteria for issuing a WWA in Central AL ? Kinda surprised to see a WWA for less than 1/2" of snow.
n or snow as our precip types. There's little to no warm nose
aloft and temps are hovering in the 32 to 35 degree range at the
surface. Where heavier precipitation is allowed to fall, dynamic
cooling will bring down the colder air to the surface and could
allow for those quick bursts of snowfall. With the possibility of
some areas being able to reach our advisory criteria of 1/4 inch,
we're going to go ahead with a Winter Weather Advisory for western
and northwestern counties. Locations with the best chance of
seeing accumulating snowfall include Carrollton to Tuscaloosa to
Jasper and points north and west.

Wow. That is crazy how low their criteria is. Basically a dusting of snow warrants a WWA.

I wonder is this storm going to catch us off guard here in Alabama

Yeah it’s so hard to get a good read on some of these borderline set ups, and so many Mets have been burned so often it does set the stage for the occasional Snowmaggedons and the like. Remember down here we get a lot of crying wolf with the models BUT at some point the wolf actually shows up. Then it isn’t pretty. If I were the TV Mets locally I would give the heads up that while the official take is such and such the possibility for a surprise is very real. Things can be communicated to hedge some bets without having to lose face either if something unexpected happens.

When I lived in Tallahassee, FL, the NWS there issued a Winter Storm Warning for what was basically a dusting of snow (granted, there was ZR, too). Then again, when there hasn’t been accumulating snowfall there in 23 years, I suppose it’s a bit different.
