This January has been like past Januarys of yore with the below normal temperatures we have been seeing and feeling. I think that for the RDU area it may end up being in the top five coldest in the record books after next week's polar temperatures are added to the equation.

The truly sobering part of this is that, if next week's storm doesn't deliver, we would have gone through Jan and much of dec below normal, with almost no snow to show for it. Hard to deal with that is that ends up reality.

And we're still in raging drought. I've kept an eye on my PWS and have recorded 2.8" TOTAL since 10/1. Euro says maybe another half inch the rest of the month. When I left in November farmers were cutting beans and kicking up dust. I come home yesterday and they've started plowing for spring and still kicking up dust. I'm not sure if the winter wheat has officially "failed" but it's only a few inches high. Dryness and the excessive cold have it down. We don't get decent rain in Feb, we're in trouble boys (and girls).

So much for that one off-warm Feb. Pattern looks to be rolling on continuously and could offer up a couple nice chances too. We're already on storm 2 incoming. A 3 or 4 would make up for the last fails.
