Wintry Jan 15-16 Winter Storm Discussion & Obs

Still 28degF here and freezing drizzle has started. Probably 4 to 5" total with snow and a lot of sleet. Road are horrendous. I expect a dusting to another inch later this evening/overnight with the last piece of energy rotating through. Winds will also begin to start cranking and I'm glad we have hardly any ice on the trees.

“I have determined that there is an imminent threat of, or existing conditions have caused or will potentially cause, widespread or severe damage, injury, or loss of life or property, and public safety authorities will be unable to maintain public order or afford adequate protection for lives or property,” said Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines.

South of 85 is going to score some quick accumulation. 1-3” likely as the banding is really getting going. Several reports of 1.5” already in southern Spartanburg county. It’s ripping it here as well with some banding back in Greenville. Plus that coming out of Georgia looks like it’s going to drop some additional snow along and north of 85 more than likely

Good call with the sleet saving the day. We ended up with almost 2” of it(on top of an inch and a half of snow).

I don’t post much but wanted to share my second snow chase. I decided to chase this storm today so my 9 & 4 year old niece could see. I left Thomson, Ga at 8am went west on I-20 too avoid some of the zr. Then headed north through Monroe up to Gainesville then took the highway all the way to Dillard, Ga around 1pm. Worst roads were the back roads coming into Gainesville due to the lack of equipment I’m guessing. The most snow we saw was definitely just before coming into the Talulah Falls area. We left Clayton, Ga around 3:30pm and it snowed all the way back. Snowed pretty hard from Cornelia all the way back to Athens. Saw our last flakes near the airport in Wilkes Co, GA around 5:30pm. Here are a couple pictures from the road.

I think that's going to do it for me. The backend band pivoted mostly south of here and was very light so probably no need to do another measurement. 6.4 it is for me. I'm very pleased!

GSP had 6.1 earlier but that band may have put down a little more down there. Either way they're less than 4 inches from a double digit year and the pattern is loaded coming up. Double digit seasons used to be fairly common, but after the winter of 92-93 they just stopped. This could finally be their first double digit season since and maybe break the streak!

ULL is moving directly over the upstate instead of the NC/TN border. That is why areas in north Georgia going east are likely going to get some additional accumulation with these backside bands. We over performed with the FGEN and dynamic cooling, escaped serious ice accretion, and got the ULL to verify further east bringing in more snow. Overall A+ for this system as just about everything went right for us.

Ground is beginning to be covered in pigeon forge, still at 34 and it appears a few hours still to go. Home we didn’t get any so I’ll take 1” any day! Thanks for sharing all your thoughts, I learn a lot and am a lurker, but know I don’t know enough to post often.
