Are there ANY vegetables that deer don't eat?
I’ve never had them touch my okra or eggplant but they’ve hit everything else. I mostly struggle with raccoons. They cleaned out my corn and okra last year even with an electric fence. This year I’m going to leave a feeder out for them as a sacrifice.

I read that deer won't mess with peppers or tomatoes, but looks like Shawn has seen them tear into hot peppers. I plan on fencing in the part of my garden with the romas and such.

Gonna wing it with okra and corn. It's a big 100 x 50ft plot so maybe there's enough there to survive nibbling

Have my pepper starts going. 42 varieties this year. Most for the market.
Peas and carrots seeding this weekend.
Bunching onions started.

Tomatoes just sprouting.

Cant wait to get it out to the gardens!

I don’t know about deer, but Goats will absolutely eat up Jalapeño plants. I would bet deer are even more hardy so that makes sense.

That all said, my goats when they would get out would just nibble tomatoes.

I am going to try and focus and grow some things this year. I feel so guilty for not being more into it and eating better and utilizing my space. We should all be being as independent and prepared as possible right now.
I ordered some Paris Island lettuce, spinach, beans, collards, tomatoes and honey dew (the picture looked so good. Ha).
Shouldn't I be able to go ahead and sew the lettuce, spinach and collard seeds now and not worry about starting inside or frost. Says earlier spring on label. Is it early spring? LMAO

You should be good to plant those now but might be best to start them indoors. I overwinter collards and they are good down to the teens. Even when it got below zero they sprang back a month later like nothing happened.

Won’t be long before the armadillos start tearing everything up

I love gardening! Even though this winter blows, I basically can’t plant anything tender outside, until basically June 1

They already make my yard look like a minefield. For some reason they don’t touch my garden plot though.
It's odd to me they are behaving the way they do. Growing up in Valdosta they were part of the landscape and I never recall people having problems with them tearing stuff up. You would think nobody could have nice yards if they were as destructed down there as up here. Somebody told my hubby to be mindful of them because they carry some sort of disease that nothing else carries. Can't remember what he said. Will have to look it up. Don't remember any of that talk either in Valdosta. Strange. Nothing works like it use too. Ha!

They carry leprosy in their nose but you really have to go to a lot of trouble to get it. My biggest surprise with them is that they aren't scared of anything. They'll come running up to me or the dog like nothing is wrong.

Yeah that's it. Now that I'm thinking about them, haven't noticed any lately. Dead in the road or anything. One time when I was a teenager hanging out in the woods with lot's of rednecks, somebody put one in the car with me. Weird creatures. Slow.

Years ago I had an opossum get in the chicken pen and kill a chicken and before I could grab my shotgun it got away. I hunted the surrounding woods for it only to hear something crawling to me in the dark. I leveled my gun expecting to get revenge on the possum when a stupid armadillo runs up right to me. The stupid thing wasn’t worth the wasting the shotgun shell.

The grocery store in Royston burned down last night. Dill's. Now there is one less place to buy food. Sort of devastating to the community. Been there forever and a staple. Only place to get better meat. Food lion is the other choice and meats are terrible. There is another Dills in Lavonia. They keep other grocery stores from coming and it's a fuss all the time. It's like the grocery store cabal or something. Dill's and Food Lion seem to have a problem with rotating and keeping fresh stuff. It's getting more difficult to navigate food shopping. Prices are outrageous because of no competition. Produce is so old and probably worthless by the time it gets to the table. Can't keep staff. Another reason to be more self sufficient. If it had been the Dill's in Lavonia, there would zero grocery stores to serve the regular and influxed coming in droves. It's crazy. Sad and lil scary really. Nobody got hurt though so that's good.

Started seedlings on the 20th for my first square foot garden. I purchased heat mats for them and the watermelon raddish, broccoli, leaf lettuce, and cabbage have already sprouted after 2 nights. I already have grow lights for when the true leaves start but i need to build my two 4x4 boxes soon. My first time doing this.

I got some seed trays with lids and lights. It only took two days for the beans to sprout. Now they are touching the top and lights and I don't know what I should do with them. I know normally they wouldn't go outside yet but I wonder if they could since it doesn't look like cold weather coming. Never know though.

The ground temps will likely kill them. Pot them up into some solo cups.

Spent a little time this weekend building a couple of raised vegetable garden beds out of cedar. Still debating where in the backyard to put them lol.

Gonna do cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, zucchini, green beans, and lettuce.

Those would make good snow boards, for measuring snow. They're deep enough to hold several years' worth of snow!

I used old Keurig cups to start my seeds this year. I mixed the old grounds with starter soil. We'll see how it goes.
Just saw that on FB the other day! Great idea
Also those solo shot glasses are great, but have to put drain holes in

Yep...The positive with the k cups are: I already buy them so they can be repurposed, and coffee grounds add nutrients of some sort. Plus, there's already a drain hole...(That's what she said)

Were you keeping some of this indoors/greenhouse up that way?
Down here, we haven't had much in the way of cool snaps so I was able to transplant seedlings to the ground all the way back in mid march.
Yeah, that’s just my houseplants! Rule of thumb here is do not plant veggies/annuals outside till after Mother’s Day. The garden centers are opening up more by the day. I’m on the look out for my usual ‘Sunsugar’ orange cherry tomatoes and the Carolina Reaper plants, that’ll grow in pots in my porch.

I bought some reaper seeds directly from Ed.. and the plant produced a couple peppers in year one that I saved and let dry out.. tried planting the seeds this season (from those saved peppers) and they're actually coming up!
