It would be nice if someone came up with a list of international weather models and ranked them in order of accuracy. Like, how does the German ICON compare to the Euro? Or the GFS? Or the CMC (Canadian}?

Each model has a number of ensemble members that make up the model. Each ensemble member has just a little bit of a tweek in the information that is incorporated into it. The model then extrapolates that information and basically makes it's best guess on all of that information which It then produces in the operational.

It is somewhat curious how the euro para, JMA, and CMA all show incredible totals

This setup is the kind that can produce big ass snowstorms....really though the thing that stands out so far is the area the models are burying with snow, usually every winter we get those nutty runs where there is a strip of 20-30" type totals, usually over small areas or somewhat narrow bands, the 18Z GFS yesterday basically gave 2/3rds of SC and NC nearly 2 FEET.....all of us at the same time.....that is truly something no one alive has seen. It also makes it extremely unlikely to verify as it would literally be unprecedented.....but lets hope this is that "first time for everything" time....

Had that TPV piece been a little further east, we would have gotten the storm. May be ice for us though.
