Wintry February 19-21, 2020 Winter Storm

Just took a nice Jeb Walk. Moderate snow continues. The sidewalks are kind of slushy, but by and large the streets are just wet. A little frustrating as I’m a street sticking weenie, but the warmish 2m temps and warm soil/pavement temps aren’t helping that. The impending darkness should turn them into a white carpet soon, however.

The cc line is racing south now towards FAY

Yep, the holy land is 15-20 miles away, batch of heavier precip sneaking in from upstate SC might be enough to fully kick me over to snow. Expecting the snow changeover by about 7pm and last thru at least midnight & perhaps thru 1-3am. 2" seems like a fair bet

Looking at the NWS radar, it looks like decent echos are showing up over eastern Wake. Not the dark greens or yellows, but decent returns nonetheless. Maybe it intensifies later. Idk

Yeah, trying to figure out where that 1 inch per hour snow is.

RDU still running on time for departures, hope that holds serve for the AM. Steady for about the last hour at 32.7/32.2, characterize as light snow, no fatties with about 1/2" on the ground, closer to an inch on elevated surfaces.

Can we even get snowfall from a coastal back in the CLT metro?

Absolutely, with the coastal low development just off Savannah, it can help enhance the moisture temporarily especially for SE Mecklenburg, Southern Cabarrus, Union and Stanly Counties. The low developing in that area just seems to allow these locations to get in on the deform band for a time. December 2010 is a great example of this. I’ve been wondering all day if that is what the HRRR is picking up on with that higher lollipop in Union County. Watch the radar for the next couple of hours and look for signs that the back edge is pivoting it’s direction
