Wintry Feb. 19-20

Why is there sleet/graupel? Are the 850's not cold enough to support snow??
The first bit of dry air it has to work through the sleet would make it down first because of its velocity and crystal structure. Once you stay in the precip for long enough it should be all snow.

Must mean the snow growth zone isnā€™t adequate yet or low enough yet, but also could mean that this thing is become really convective, the band is about 10KFT high and air is really cold aloft. Might see a lightning strike in this thing or 2 IMG_6107.png
 
For us farther east, it looks like the precip is building and moving east. Here's one radar, which isn't picking up on the returns farther south towards Charlotte and the southern foothills:
